Boston Celtics: Kevin Garnett Explains Video Message He Sent Team
What was behind the motivational message former Boston Celtics star Kevin Garnett sent to the team prior to Game 3?
Anything is possible! The words former Boston Celtics great Kevin Garnett shouted after the team’s 18th NBA championship victory, was the inspiration behind his private message to the team ahead of their Game 3 win over the Chicago Bulls.
Down 0-2 and looking emotionally out of it, Garnett sent the team an inspirational video message. While the content of that message was meant to be private, many players gained inspiration from the words of the man who bleeds green. If the Celtics win the series, the message will be looked at as a catalyst.
Speaking on TNT Monday night, Garnett was asked about the video. While he didn’t share what was on the video, he did share the motivation behind his inspirational message.

"“I’m going to be honest, man, we can all attest to this: I feel a special place in my heart when it comes to the Celtics, just like I do with the Timberwolves,” Garnett explained, as transcribed by The Sporting News. “Whenever those guys lean on me for any type of advice – this was separate of that. I let all the powers that be know that when it comes to players, I’m a player first, and that’s where my badge is.”"
Garnett went on to say that the message was intended for Isaiah Thomas in response to the recent tragedy he endured. Thomas shared the message with his teammates as it was a reminder that they are all Celtics and have to remember why they are playing the game. He told Thomas specifically to play for his sister.
With their play in both Game 3 and Game 4, Kevin Garnett’s message has united the team. As Jae Crowder phrased it, the team has to “play for one another and play for the moment at hand, which is the playoffs.”
