The New England Revolution had very few chances to score in their match against the Seattle Sounders. They took advantage of what they had but failed to keep the Sounders onslaught at bay in the dying minutes.

With a 3-0 lead in the 74th minute and the Sounders struggling to get anything going it looked like the New England Revolution had their biggest win of the season in the bag. It ended up being just another example of “don’t count your chickens before they hatch” or “It’s not over until it’s over.”

Throughout the game the Revs saw very little of the ball and were forced to play inside their half of the pitch, defending shot after shot and clearing attack after attack.

By the end of the match the Revs had 45 clearances on Defense and only maintained 25% of the ball possession.

More from Chowder and Champions

If it wasn’t for the Revs biggest lead of the season being stolen from under them the fact they managed a point at all would be worth celebrating. It’s incredible that New England had the lead at any point in the game with those numbers. Without watching the game it’s a surprise that the Sounders didn’t blow them out.

In reality the reason the Sounders only managed to salvage a point in the match was due to poor shooting. Seattle had 26 shots in the game, doubling New England’s total but only managed to put eight of them on target.

Some good takeaways for the Revolution are how successful their attacks (or should I say counter-attacks) were and how stout their defense was for the majority of the match.

As long as New England can keep the attacking form up and work on giving the defense a break this team could shoot up the MLS table.

Man of the Match

My man of the match award goes to Juan Agudelo, more specifically his head. Just take a look at these two beautiful plays.

In this second play Agudelo manages to place himself in the perfect spot to keep out this goal. Little did anyone know at the time it was the game-saving save.

Agudelo also scored this exquisitely set up goal on the counter-attack.

Diago Kobayashi also deserves a mention for his knuckler that put the Revs on the board for the first time.

My less biased man of the match would have to go to Sounders keeper, Stefan Frei. Frei made some great saves against the more-accurate Revs to save the point. Here are a few examples.
