Boston Red Sox young lefty Eduardo Rodriguez spun another beauty in a no-decision against the defending world champion Chicago Cubs.

Perhaps Chris Sale is rubbing off on Boston Red Sox young left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez.

The 24-year-old starting pitcher delivered brilliance on the mound Sunday night at Fenway Park.  He kept the Chicago Cubs offense in check and off balance throughout the night with a very effective changeup.

Rodriguez solid performance didn’t result in a victory, but the team did go on to defeat the Cubs 6-2 to take two of three from the defending world champions in the weekend series.

More from Boston Red Sox

Overall, the Venezuelan pitcher allowed just one run over six innings with nine strikeouts. He was impressive in the way that he kept a very dangerous Cubs lineup at bay the entire night.  More importantly, the solid outing Sunday night followed a stellar performance just a game prior.

Eduardo Rodriguez is a man focused

It has only been a few games, but the way Eduardo Rodriguez has performed on the mound may be evidence that he is ready to live up to the hype on a consistent basis.  Red Sox manager John Farrell highlighted Rodriguez’s performance following the game, giving emphasis to his focus and confidence.

"“More than anything he feels confident and so when he sees pitches up in the strike zone there’s no hesitation, there’s no thought to what his swing is doing,” Farrell told reporters, as transcribed by WEEI. “He gets a pitch up from Hendricks and jumps all over it. So much like the first pitch from [John] Lackey yesterday, first pitch again today. He’s seeing the ball well.”"

With David Price working his way back to the starting rotation, the Red Sox could have one of the best five-man rotations in baseball if Rodriguez can continue his emergence.

In over 23 1/3 inning pitched, Eduardo Rodriguez has struck out 31 batters.  Over that time he has posted an ERA of 2.70.  His command on the mound as well as his mindset going into starts are two factors contributing to his success so far this season.  Health has also played a role.

Hopefully, Rodriguez’s brilliance on the mound continues throughout the season.  It looks like it just might.
