Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriquez has been placed on the 10-Day DL. Let’s take a look at back Rodriquez’ season so far.

Eduardo Rodriquez or as many call him “E-Rod”, has the potential to be a consistent All-Star pitcher for the Boston Red Sox for a long time to come. Only 24 years old, E-Rod is only in his 3rd season.

He has started 51 games in his 3 year career with the Red Sox. Going 17-15 with a 4.10 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in those 51 starts. Not great numbers but he is young and ever improving.

Before being placed on the DL, E-Rod had been pitching much better than his first two seasons. Despite a +3.00 ERA, Rodriquez is having a great season, here is his stat line so far.

| 10 GS | 4-2 W/L | 61.0 IP | 65 SO | 24 ER | 49 H | 21 BB | 1.15 WHIP | 3.54 ERA |

In a short 3 year career, E-Rod’s ERA, WHIP, Win %, and strikeouts per inning are the best of his career thus far this season. One of his biggest concerns is inconsistency, which isn’t unordinary amongst young MLB pitchers. Injuries have also plagued E-Rod’s first couple of seasons, he has yet to surpass 125 inning pitched in a season.

Rodriquez is on pace to finally pass 125 innings pitched this season, he is actually on pace for 150-170 innings pitched. Hopefully one day he can consistently pitch 150-250 innings every season. With Wright out for the season, and Porcello struggling, E-Rod needs to be Boston’s third guy (Behind Sale and Price) when he comes off the DL.

How did Eduardo Rodriquez injure himself and how serious is it?

Early reports are it is not serious at all, so take a breath. E-Rod slipped and fell while warming up in the bullpen. He just tweaked his knee and appears to be fine, but he also tweaked the same knee in spring training, so there is a bit of a concern.

An odd situation has come up, as some seem to find it odd that Rodriquez’ injury came directly after his worst start of the season, but it is believed that he played through an injury. Boston needs to be cautious after already losing a great starting pitcher (Steven Wright) for the season.

Rodriquez knew he wasn’t 100% but wanted to prove his toughness by not letting Boston’s staff about it. Here is what Red Sox manager John Farrell about the situation.

"“When he came in, he was very forthright in what took place,” said Farrell. “Obviously (pitching coach) Carl (Willis) being right there with him. He was adamant about continuing. Felt like he wasn’t putting himself in harm’s way any further. So, every precaution was taken to get him into that game and continue in that game.“No, I wouldn’t have done it any differently,” Farrell added, “because I didn’t feel like, based on feedback he was giving, based on the fluidity in his delivery, I don’t think he was putting any added stress on the shoulder or the elbow.”"

Things could be worse as the 10-Day DL means E-Rod will only miss 2-3 starts. The young stud needs to continue to improve and grow when he comes back from the DL. With Chris Sale dominating and David Price pitching well after coming back from injury, E-Rod could solidify one of the best pitching rotation’s in baseball.
