What are their plans in Round 1?

There’s a great piece by The Hockey Writers on this, but here’s my opinion.

Round 1

There are a few possibilities for the Bruins that have gained steam, but first a couple of things to remember. First, the Bruins prospect pool is actually pretty deep in most areas. Where they’re lacking is down the right side, both at Right Wing and Right Defense. Now, this doesn’t mean they’re definitely gonna look in that direction, but they should consider it. Second, is the Bruins tendency to look at the college ranks. Sweeney has found a lot of success drafting players of the NCAA. Think McAvoy, Frederic, Bjork, and JFK, all recent picks who didn’t go the major junior route. Again, this is just a tendency and not a hard and fast rule. With that knowledge, let’s look at the possibilities.

Trade down

…and select goalie prospect Jake Oettinger. He’s possibly the top goalie in this draft, but if the Bruins take him at #18 it would be a bit of a reach in my opinion. If this is the direction they want to go in, they might as well move down and gain some assets. That being said they will most likely give Malcolm Subban another year to grow before drafting a new heir to Tuukka’s thrown.

Trade the pick

…for a top 4 Defenseman. While this would be the most exciting option, its time has passed. If the Bruins wanted to make a move for a Jonis Brodin type, they should have done it before the expansion draft. I guess it could still happen, but the asking price will be even higher now.

Keep the pick

It seems more and more likely that this is the direction Sweeney’s gonna take. I’ll give my prediction and then a few other possibilities.

Eeli Tolvanen: He’s a Finnish Right Wing that played this past year in the USHL. At 5’10 170, he’s on the smaller side, but that shouldn’t discourage the Bruins after their success with David Pastrnak. He is rated to go a little higher than the #18, but there’s a good chance he starts to fall down teams’ draft boards. News broke on Thursday that Tolvanen was not admitted to Boston College. Hopefully, this is a big enough worry to teams that he falls to the Bruins at the #18 pick.

Other Possibilities:

Kristian Vesalainen

Ryan Poehling

Erik Brannstrom
