Boston Bruins: Ryan Spooner files for salary arbitration
Seeking a raise, Boston Bruins forward Ryan Spooner has filed for salary arbitration. A hearing will be set for next month, but meanwhile, both sides will continue to work on a deal.
The Boston Bruins are taking care of their own players internally so far this offseason, and Ryan Spooner should be next. The forward has filed for salary arbitration before the 5 PM deadline on Wednesday, as many expected him to do.
A hearing will be set for next month, but both sides are reportedly committed to working out a deal before then. The 25-year old center is coming off of a two-year $1.9 million contract with the Bruins, and he clearly believes he’s worth more.

Last season in Boston, Spooner tallied 11 goals as a apart of his 39 points over 78 games. Over 80 games in 2015-16, he had 13 goals and 49 points. Most fans and experts believe that Spooner still has room to improve, but averaging 12 goals and 44 points per season should earn him a pay increase.
Spooner is expected to ask for a one-year deal between $2 million and $3 million, which is spot on for his production so far. Boston could sign Spooner and send him packing in a trade though as well. He’s had his fair share of issues with Bruins coaches and the fans sometimes notice his defensive lapses.
Ryan Spooner believed former Bruins coach Claude Julien disliked him as a player, and new head coach Bruce Cassidy has criticized Spooner’s offensive game publicly. The Bruins could pair Spooner and David Krejci to land a top-six forward, or they could look to trade Spooner for a defenseman to pair with rookie Charlie McAvoy. One things for sure, the Bruins should be dealing pretty soon.
