Should the Boston Celtics trade for Kyrie Irving?
With four time All Star Kyrie Irving demanding a trade out of Cleveland, should the Boston Celtics pull the trigger?
Here’s your answer to that Boston Celtics fans.
No.
I know, I know. Isaiah Thomas is going to demand a bunch of money next year, we don’t know how his hip is, blah, blah, blah. I’ve seen all the arguments from both sides. The funny part is Kyrie Irving is probably my favorite non-Celtics player (along with Steph Curry interestingly enough). So having Kyrie in green would be incredible for me. However, there’s a big picture to look at here.
Isaiah Thomas is just as good.
It’s true. Statistically, IT was actually more productive in that Celtics offense than Kyrie was in Cleveland. Their games are really different, and IT has shown he’s a full team guy. I know Irving wants to go somewhere and be ‘the guy’, but part of me wonders if that’s actually true. He stated the San Antonio Spurs as one of his preferred destinations. You can’t have an ego like that if you play for Popovich and co, and there’s no way Irving doesn’t know that already.

Thomas has shown a commitment to Boston
He’s really bought into the city and this organization, and he’s been doing everything in his power to recruit people. Isaiah was so ball dominant last year because he had to be.

Unless you watched Celtics basketball throughout the regular season, you didn’t really get to see how bad the offense was without him. That team needed IT to have the year he did, but he also showed that he can be a playmaker. Kyrie plays ISO ball out of choice, and his handles are damn good for it. However, ISO ball isn’t necessarily winning basketball.
They’re both the same defensively
Accurate. Kyrie Irving is 6 foot 3, and Isaiah Thomas is 5 foot 9. Both are about the same defensively, which is crazy because at his length Kyrie has the chance to be at least solid on the defensive end. I can tell you Isaiah does try defensively, it’s not his fault he doesn’t have the height to truly bother guys. He’s had his moments though, and it’s damn fun to watch.
Just a quick throw in, yes we don’t know what Isaiah will actually look like on the court next season, but remember when Kyrie fractured his kneecap a few years back? This season that knee was apparently bothering him once again.

Listen, the Boston Celtics are very fortunate to be in the position they are in, and while I highly doubt Irving lands here, all we can do is wait and see.
