The UMass Minutemen are continuing their trend of scheduling tough, SEC opponents. In 2020 they’ll travel to Auburn to take on the Tigers.

In 2016 the UMass Minutemen took on the SEC’s Florida Gators and Mississippi State Bulldogs. This season they’ll face MSU once again, as well as Tennessee on the road. UMass has Georgia scheduled in 2018 and now, they have another SEC opponent scheduled for 2020.

Although we are still a few years away from 2020, UMass is already beginning to solidify their schedule. So far, we know they will take on the Auburn Tigers and the Mississippi State Bulldogs, both on the road.

The game against Auburn is scheduled for November 14th, so UMass will have a tough start to the second half of their season. Sure, it seems like UMass will get killed in any SEC game they play for the next few seasons, but that’s how you better your program. Scheduling cupcake games would be too easy as an independent, so the school is aiming to progress quickly.

More from College Sports

The rosters for both UMass and Auburn will look drastically different by 2020, but you can count on the Tigers to have the better team and the better talent. UMass will aim to simply remain competitive. Last season at Florida, UMass lost 24-7. That score should have been much higher for the Gators. While it’s a three score game, the Minutemen should have been pleased with their defensive effort. Later in the season, UMass was able to put up 35 points in a loss to Mississippi State. That’s another good sign for the program.

If UMass can continue to improve against strong competition, I could see them earning commitments from more and more recruits around the country. These road games allow them to recruit nationwide, and they give high school recruits more face time with the up and coming program.
