Former UConn Huskies head coach Jim Calhoun recently hinted at a coaching comeback, but it wouldn’t mean a return to Storrs.

Jim Calhoun, the former UConn Huskies head coach, recently hinted at the possibility of a coaching comeback.

Now 75, Calhoun retired in 2012 after 26 seasons with the Huskies. In that time, he led UConn to three National Championships, with the last coming in 2011 over the Butler Bulldogs.

Sources have indicated that Calhoun could pursue the coaching job at the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford. St. Joseph’s is a new Division III program in the NCAA.

"“I’ve got a couple of other things in the works, one involving basketball which I’m intrigued by,” Calhoun said. “It’s coaching.”"

The former coach hasn’t been completely out of basketball since his retirement. He’s been an advisor at UConn and an analyst for ESPN. Now though, it seems like that coaching itch has returned for Calhoun.

"“Every time I talk to somebody, the kids, I realize how much I miss the kids,” Calhoun said. “I say, ‘I know there were times you never thought you’d miss me. There are times I never thought I’d miss you.’ We all miss each other. That’s what I miss, people getting together, getting on a bus, driving someplace.”"

Kevin Ollie, UConn’s current head coach, knows that Jim Calhoun still has much to offer in terms of coaching.

"“I know he’s always a coach at heart and I know he wants to get back on that sideline,” Ollie said. “Whatever he chooses to do, I know some kids are going to really benefit from his presence on a day-to-day basis. If he decides just to be with his grandkids, they’re going to benefit, too. Whatever Coach wants to do, I’m going to be supporting it and I just love him for his energy each and every day that he brings, and the life lessons he’s taught me.”"

While we certainly miss seeing Calhoun on the UConn sidelines, it’s nice to see how much he still cares about the program.

Perhaps he could swing a deal to still be able to assist the Huskies in some capacity while also coaching at the University of St. Joseph. Calhoun’s decision could be coming within the week, but right now the University has said that they have nothing to announce.
