The Boston Red Sox have a chance to clinch a playoff spot Wednesday night, but they’ll need a little help from the Indians to do so.

The Boston Red Sox will have a little bit more to play for when they take on the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night. They could be celebrating the clinching of a postseason spot when the night ends.

The Sox magic number is 2 entering the night, so with a win over Baltimore, they’ll still need some help. The Los Angeles Angels are the team that can help out if they lose. There’s a good chance that happens tonight since the Angels have to face the Cleveland Indians. This will probably be the last time a Red Sox fan roots for the Indians this season. Meanwhile,

Meanwhile, Chris Sale will be on the mound tonight, so Boston has a great chance to win and take care of their own business.

Boston’s magic number to clinch the AL East is currently sitting at 9. That number is based on the number of Red Sox wins or New York Yankees losses going forward. So theoretically, if the Red Sox win nine of their remaining games, they’ll earn the AL East crown. The same will happen if the Yankees lose nine of their remaining games. Any combo of Red Sox wins and Yankees losses that adds up to nine will put the AL East title in Boston.

Going forward, the Red Sox have one game remaining in Baltimore, and then an off day Thursday. A three-game with the Reds will begin on Friday. Boston will then return home on Monday for three games against the Toronto Blue Jays and will finish the regular season with 4 games against the Houston Astros.

Next: Red Sox trending upwards

Boston will look to continue their winning ways after back-to-back extra-innings wins. The Red Sox now have 15 such wins this season, and it’s their most in a long time. If they continue to play with that much heart, passion, and grit, they’re going to be a tough team in the postseason.
