Special teams and timely scoring were the differences for the Dartmouth College football team Saturday, propelling them to defeat Holy Cross.

After defeating Stetson 38-7 last weekend, the Dartmouth College football team pulled off yet another impressive victory against Holy Cross on Saturday Night in Hanover.

The Big Green looked fine-tuned offensively in their opener, rushing for 324 total yards while senior quarterback Jack Heneghan threw for a touchdown. But Saturday’s affair was much more defensive and involved key plays on special teams too.

Dartmouth jumped out to an early lead on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Heneghan to receiver Emory Thompson. The Crusaders responded with a 12-play 73-yard drive to tie the score at seven.

But by halftime, Holy Cross had a 14-13 edge despite an interception from QB Peter Pujals that landed in the hands of Dartmouth’s Colin Boyt. The score stayed close until the end of the third when it looked like the Big Green may break away after a 44-yard touchdown run by Stone.

The Final Act

With three seconds left in the fourth, the Crusaders tied the game at 20 after completing a 13-play 86-yard drive in under four minutes. Their possession even included three fourth down conversions. But in order to win the game, Holy Cross needed to convert the extra point.

Though earlier the game, Dartmouth had blocked a Crusader field goal. In the dying seconds of the game, this feat repeated itself as Jeremiah Douchee blocked his fifth career kick. After the block, the ball was fumbled and returned to the opposite end zone for Dartmouth. However, an illegal forward pass sent the game to overtime.

In overtime, Stephen Johnston caught a ten yard TD pass from Heneghan to give Dartmouth the lead. Holy Cross was then forced to score again and converted another fourth down to conceivably tie the game once more. Though following a Big Green called timeout, Holy Cross decided to go for the two-point conversion and win the game. A screen pass from Pujals ensued, but the ball carrier was stopped by linebacker Jake Moen to give Dartmouth the win.

Offensively, the Big Green racked up 366 total yards. Meanwhile, Holy Cross went six of six on fourth down.
