David Ortiz has a lifelong contract with the Boston Red Sox, but this postseason he’ll be playing for a different team with FOX Sports.

When Boston Red Sox fans tune into MLB postseason coverage on FOX this year, they’ll see a familiar face in front of the camera. Former slugger David Ortiz is joining the FOX team for the entirety of the postseason.

Kevin Burkhardt, Alex Rodriguez, and Frank Thomas will all remain in the FOX studio, but Ortiz and Keith Hernandez will join them. Hernandez is a Mets broadcaster on SNY in New York. Ortiz and Hernandez are replacing Pete Rose, who FOX severed ties with this August after allegations of sexual contact with a minor.

While David Ortiz has no broadcasting experience, he’ll certainly add some personality to the set. He can be brutally honest, and I’m sure he will be critical of the Boston Red Sox even if they struggle in the ALDS against the Houston Astros. Ortiz holds nothing back, and that’s likely why FOX chose to add him to their team.

More from Chowder and Champions

This could actually also be the start of a new career for David Ortiz if he can hold his own with the more experienced analysts. I’m sure we will see a lot of entertaining action between the former players, and I’m interested to see if Ortiz draws Alex Rodriguez into any light-hearted arguments. Big Papi also has a lot in common with former White Sox slugger Frank Thomas, and I’m going to love hearing them talk about a player’s approach at the plate.

I’m sure we will also get a ton of insight into the Red Sox locker room, as Ortiz is still very close to the organization and the players there. We should get some postseason stories from 2004, 2007, and 2013 as well.

Don’t forget Keith Hernandez also has playing experience in the majors too. He played for the Cardinals, Mets, and Indians in the 70’s and 80’s with an MVP award in 1979. Hernandez, a first baseman, won World Series titles in 1982 and 1986, one in St. Louis and one in New York. He’s going to be a great addition to the studio team this October.
