Imagine if the New England Patriots traded Tom Brady prior to the trade deadline and not Jimmy Garoppolo?  Yeah, pretty hard to imagine.

Apparently, Bill Belichick still has some sanity left.  Just days after the New England Patriots coach/general manager traded away the team’s quarterback of the future, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer has added a new wrinkle to what went down this past offseason.

According to Glazer, San Francisco 49ers GM John Lynch initially went all in by reportedly asking Belichick the availability of one Tom Brady prior to the season.  As stone faced as the Patriots head coach looks during press conferences, imagine his expression when he received such a phone call.

With NFL Adam Schefter confidentially reporting at the time that the Patriots were content with holding on to Jimmy Garoppolo, I guess you couldn’t blame Lynch for trying.

Here’s how the conversation went as narrated by Glazer.

"“So Lynch calls back,” Glazer said, as transcribed by WEEI.  “Garoppolo’s off limits.  Will you trade us Tom Brady?  Belichick said, ‘What did you just ask me? Lynch responds, ‘I’m asking would you trade us Tom Brady?  You said Garoppolo’s off limits.’  He goes, ‘Did you just ask me if you’d trade Tom Brady…Did you just ask me if I’d trade the greatest quarterback of all time?”"

As crazy as that sounds, it may not be that far off course that Belichick would’ve actually entertained the idea of trading the 40-year-old quarterback if there were any signs of decline.

Dion Lewis back to full force physically and mentally

New England Patriots
FOXBORO, MA – OCTOBER 22: Dion Lewis /

New England Patriots running back group have carried the load the last couple weeks and Dion Lewis has led the way.

More from Chowder and Champions

Back to his 2015 form, Lewis has seen his workload increase and boy has he taken advantage of it.  According to running backs coach Ivan Fears, much of Lewis’ success this season has been due to his confidence more than his physical ability coming off a torn ACL.

"“Guys coming off injuries are always – I think it’s a mental block, part of it is mental,” Fears said, via the Taunton Daily Gazette.  “But once they get through it, once they feel like they’re themselves then they’re back and going.  And Dion, yeah, he’s just like anyone else.  When you have a big injury, you’re not sure.  And now he’s sure.”"

That certainly is showing on the field.  Not only has Dion Lewis gained his strength back, that shiftiness and elusiveness has returned.
