San Francisco Giants

The Giants would love to add Stanton, but their dearth of top prospects make this a decided long shot. Stanton would likely have to invoke his no-trade clause to force the Marlins to accept a clearly inferior offer.

Infielder Christian Arroyo has appeared on a few Top 100 prospect lists. He’s young with impressive contact skills, but lack of power limits his upside. Still, as a shortstop, that profile has value.

Power, on the other hand, is the name of 1B/OF Chris Shaw’s game. Already 24 and with limited value in the field, he’ll have to make the most of his limited skills to contribute to a contender.

Perhaps P Tyler Beede would quicken Jeter’s pulse enough to make a deal. Injuries stalled his ascent and his stuff isn’t ace-level, but he’s more of a polished pitcher than a thrower and could contribute immediately.

Clearly this represents a light return for a 59 homer hitting 28-year-old, but if Stanton insists on San Francisco or bust, Miami may have to make do.

Other Contenders

Of course, virtually every team would welcome a Giancarlo Stanton to their lineup.

The clock is ticking for aging stars Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz and Felix Hernandez. Adding Stanton would maximize the Mariners window to contend.

Toronto might lose Josh Donaldson to free agency after next season. Acquiring Stanton would help them compete in the rough-and-tumble AL East while easing the sting should Donaldson depart.

The Dodgers seem to chase every available shiny object, and bringing aboard Stanton could pacify a fan base disappointed by the team’s World Series loss to the Astros.

Heck, if Stanton’s goal is a ring, he could do worse than to suit up for the defending champs. There’s a job opening for a slugger in Houston with Carlos Beltran’s recent retirement.

That said, Red Sox fans can’t underestimate Dave Dombrowski. When he wants a player, he seldom fails to acquire him. Which means Red Sox Nation better brace itself, because if Trader Dave sees Giancarlo Stanton as this team’s missing piece, he’ll have to best some tough competition to bring him to Boston.
