The Boston Bruins lost in a shootout but are now only a point shy of having home ice throughout the playoffs.

The Boston Bruins are having a phenomenal season. They are now only a point shy of first place in the Eastern Conference. Before the season started Bruins fans were just hoping to make the playoffs.  Now it is Stanley Cup or bust. As the season nears its end, the Bruins have the opportunity to secure home ice throughout the playoffs. They inched closer as they took the Winnipeg Jets to a shootout on Tuesday night.

The young guns keep on producing

One of the reasons the Bruins have had such a good season is the play of their young studs. Ryan Donato was born into the NHL a few weeks ago yet he is already paying dividends. Donato scored his 3rd goal of the season on Tuesday. He dangled through the Jets defense to tie the game early in the first period.

Even though Donato just joined the Bruins you have to put him on the postseason roster. He has already shown that he can perform well with the big boys. Donato is a special player and like Charlie McAvoy I expect him to have a great postseason.

More from Chowder and Champions

Another young star who continues to play great is Danton Heinen. He now has 14 goals in his surprisingly good rookie season. Heinen has come out of nowhere and has become one of the best scorers on the team. Like Donato, Heinen has to be on the postseason roster. These two will be dangerous in the playoffs.

Marchand’s overtime magic runs out

Brad Marchand added to his great resume on Tuesday night.  He had two assists on the night and almost won the game for the Bruins.

Marchand had a breakaway at the end of overtime. He made a great poke check and was all alone. Every Boston Bruins fan thought that the game was in the bag. Marchand has to score right? Sadly we were all wrong as Connor Hellebuyck made a clutch save to send the game to a shootout.

Marchand has 33 goals and 49 assists this season. He is having one of the best seasons of his career. It seems like he continues to get better and better. Marchand would be looked at as one of the best offensive players in the NHL if it wasn’t for his poor reputation outside of Boston.

Who cares we have a shot at first place

It may not have been the best of nights for Anton Khudobin as he gave up 4 goals, but that doesn’t matter. The Boston Bruins are a point shy of first place in the Eastern Conference. They play the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night with an opportunity to overtake them for the top spot in the East.

The Bruins have a legit chance to secure home ice throughout the playoffs. With such a young team, home ice is very important as it will be most of these guys first playoff experience.

Next: Mr. Overtime does it again

Thursday will be another test for this team. If the Boston Bruins can defeat the Lightning and leapfrog into first place it will be yet another notch on this team’s impressive belt.
