The price of valued starts

As much as the Boston Red Sox have been losing with Chris Sale on the mound, they have been winning during David Price starts.

More from Chowder and Champions

He is getting a bit more run support, but the fact that he has had the team in position to win, primarily in his last six starts is why the team backed up the Brinks truck and signed the man to a $117 million contract.

The game certainly didn’t start out the way the Red Sox or Price would’ve liked.  The lefty gave up two runs in the first inning, but bounced back to pitch five scoreless innings to put the team and himself in shape for the victory.

A clutch moment in the game came in sixth inning.  With a 4-2 lead, David Price stood on the mound with former Red Sox top prospect Yoan Moncada at the plate.  With runners on first and third, Price struck Moncada out to put out the threat.

The key strikeout came with two outs, which Price has struggled with this season.

"“I’m throwing the baseball better and I’m throwing better strikes,” Price said following the game.  “I’m throwing it better when I have two outs and that has kind of been my Achilles’ heel this year, giving up that big hit with two outs and runners in scoring position.  That is something that has hurt me a lot.”"

In last six outings, David Price has an ERA of 2.89.  He is looking strong, showing he can be clutch in key moments and most importantly, is giving the Boston Red Sox a chance to win when he steps on the mound.
