Kyrie Irving’s comments may seem troubling, but the Boston Celtics shouldn’t start worrying about the future of their team.

The Kyrie Irving saga continues. It seemed as though Irving would play the rest of his career with the Boston Celtics after he was embraced by the city in his first season with the team. Now things aren’t as clear. Irving made some comments recently that may seem troubling, but there really is no need to freak out.

Speaking at an event promoting his new movie “Uncle Drew,” Irving said that it makes no sense for him to sign a contract extension.

"“Contractually, financially, it just doesn’t make any sense,” Irving said.More from Chowder and Champions3 Midseason Chaim Bloom Decisions That Have Killed the 2023 Red Sox10 Patriots Who Will Be Cut by Tuesday’s Roster DeadlineMLB Screws Red Sox Fans With Broadcast for Mookie Betts Return3 Most Underpaid Celtics Heading Into the 2023 SeasonRed Sox Continue Rollercoaster Season With Massive Win"

Now some people are saying that the Boston Celtics need to pound the panic button after hearing this. This must mean Irving won’t be coming back, right? No. Irving’s statement is just the truth. Kyrie is coming off a great season, but one that ended earlier than he expected. His worth may have taken a slight dip, and he may be able to make more money next season.

Irving is taking a gamble though. He needs to have a great season to get the big money. If he gets hurt, teams will start to question his long-term durability.

MythBuster

Another interesting comment was about the team’s success in the postseason. There were some people (Jalen Rose) who said that Irving was hoping for his team to lose and angry with their success. Irving dispelled that myth rather quickly.

"“For me, I’m just glad everyone got to learn how special they were on a bigger stage. I’d been talking about how great [the younger players] were. Some of their numbers probably didn’t look as appealing to the outside-looker, but they were just — they were always locked in. And then when they were afforded the opportunity to take the reins of the team, you saw them take full advantage of it. You saw guys that literally are going to be stars in this league for years to come.”"

It seems that Kyrie really enjoys playing in Boston. So don’t think it is the end of the world just because he is making a financial decision.

Irving is going to demand the big bucks, and Danny Ainge would be smart to pay the man his worth since he is a top 3 point guard in the NBA today.
