The Boston Bruins made their first splash of the offseason by signing Matt Grzelcyk to a two-year contract.

Matt Grzelcyk developed into a quality defenseman in his first season in the NHL, and the Boston Bruins rewarded the restricted free agent with a new two-year deal worth $2.8 million.

Grzelcyk had a great rookie season. In 61 games he scored 3 goals, 12 assists, and had a rating of +21. He was okay in his own zone but definitely needs to work on playing a cleaner game. It may be because it is fresh in our minds, but that turnover in the Tampa series where he basically directed the Lightning player straight to the net.

With the Bruins signing Grzelcyk and giving him a nice payday, you have to think he will have his spot on the 3rd defensive pairing locked up. This means the Bruins will have two small guys on the roster which may seem troublesome. Grzelcyk and Torey Krug proved that they won’t be pushed around in their own zone. It may have to do with his playing time, but Grzelcyk’s rating speaks for itself.

More from Boston Bruins

Grzelcyk shocked a lot of people last season. Adam McQuaid and Paul Postma were expected to garner most of the playing time, but due to injuries, Grzelcyk got playing time and delivered.

It will be interesting to see who Grzelcyk is paired with next season. The Bruins are looking to add a top-four defenseman on the left side. The Bruins could have a new look defense when they start their season in October.

Next: Torey Krug isn't going anywhere

Matt Grzelcyk stepped up to the plate last season and the Bruins rewarded him. Hopefully Grzelcyk will show that the Bruins made a good investment.
