With the defenseman’s name being thrown around in trade talks, Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney shot down the idea of trading Torey Krug.

Torey Krug had one of the best seasons of his career last season. He had an offensive outburst putting up 59 points in the regular season. Still with the Boston Bruins struggles in their own zone during the playoffs, Krug’s name has come up in trade talks as the B’s look to improve their defense. If you were hoping to see Krug gone it doesn’t look like it will be happening anytime soon.

Bruins GM Don Sweeney sat down for an interview with NHL.com and made it rather clear that you should expect to see Krug back next season.

"“Look, you never know. I’m not actively shopping Torey. People call on a lot of different guys that we have. I have private conversations with each and every general manager, but we value what Torey brings to the table. It’s very difficult to replace a 60-point guy. He’s grown with our organization. He’s grown into a leadership role on and off the ice. He’s a big part of our success. I’d say it’s unlikely.”"

An offensive weapon

Krug was one of the Bruins leading scorers last season. He amassed 14 goals and 45 assists in the regular season. These are some impressive numbers. Krug’s output landed him in the top 10 for points from a defenseman in the entire NHL.

More from Boston Bruins

Krug’s defense may have some ways to go. His size puts him at a disadvantage, but his size isn’t what gets him into trouble. Krugh has been known to make an errant pass across the zone and sometimes these can lead to goals.

Still, Sweeney is making the smart move by keeping Krug. He should continue to put up great numbers and be effective on the powerplay.

If the Bruins want to get rid of a defenseman it should be Adam McQuaid. McQuaid will be 32 next season and tends to get injured. McQuaid only played in 38 games last season. Both him and Kevan Miller play a similar game, but Miller is better in the offensive zone.

Next: The Bruins need to keep the 1st line together

It appears that the Boston Bruins brass has taken a liking to Krug. He has grown up with the team and has become a great player. Hopefully, he can improve on what was an amazing season and take the next step in his career.
