Boston Celtics 1st round draft pick Robert Williams has been dealing with a lot of negative press. It seems like Williams is letting his play do the talking.

Robert Williams may want to think about hiring a PR team. The Boston Celtics draft pick seems to always be in the news for the wrong reasons. Williams has stepped on the court and is already impressing some Celtics coaches.

Williams motivation was a question mark. It was one of the reasons he dropped so far in the draft. Scouts knew that the talent was there, but didn’t know if Williams had the mental fortitude and attitude to last in the NBA.

These claims only grew when Williams missed his introductory conference call and then later missed his flight causing him to miss the Celtics first summer league practice. All of these things can make you think that the Celtics may have made the wrong decision.

More from Chowder and Champions

Williams took full responsibility for the mistakes and genuinely seems to be on the right track. Especially after the glowing review he got from Celtics coaches after Williams first summer league practice.

"“He dunks with his elbows, which is a really positive thing,” Jay Larranaga said before practice yesterday. “He’s been really, really good. Really focused. Picked up the points of emphasis that we had yesterday in practice really well. Seems very coachable. This is the beginning of the process for him and for the summer league team. Day 1 was good.”"

Finally some good news

This is exactly what you want to hear. This is the reason that the Boston Celtics drafted Williams. He has the talent to be a great player. With Brad Stevens and other Celtics mentoring him the possibilities are endless.

I believe Williams will have a solid rookie year because there isn’t a lot of pressure on him. The Celtics have a ton of talent. Williams won’t have the same pressure that Jayson Tatum had last year. Williams will be at the bottom of a stacked bench. He will be able to focus on becoming a better basketball player and not have to worry about being one of the Celtics main scorers.

Williams has a long wingspan and can be a problem for opposing teams in the paint. he is able to disrupt shots and also make space for himself to get open on offense. His athleticism is his greatest tool and must have Brad Stevens chomping at the bit to get his hands on Williams.

Robert Williams is headed in the right direction. Hopefully he doesn’t decide to go off the rails once again.
