Adding a veteran third-basemen could be proven beneficial for the Boston Red Sox now, and in the future.

With the MLB trade deadline approaching, top tier teams are scrambling to make moves. Adding one or two pieces can put a team over the top. The Boston Red Sox have to do something. Bullpen pitching seems to be the top need, but what about adding a veteran presence to the infield?

Adrian Beltre of the Texas Rangers could fit nicely here in Boston.

The 21-year veteran is hitting .286 with 4 HR and 26 RBI with a .739 OPS. He has made only 8 errors in 44 games at the hot corner this year. The veteran could also benefit from hitting at Fenway Park, as he as proven power in the big leagues and now would be playing in one of the most hitter friendly parks in the league.

More from Chowder and Champions

Beltre’s versatility also allows Alex Cora a chance to move him to second base if need be. Trading for Beltre however, would most likely mean Rafeal Devers’ days as the starting third basemen for the 2018 Red Sox are all but over.

The Devers- Beltre relationship

Rafael Devers is a great young player. He has an electric bat and plays ok defense. Currently, he is on the 10 day disabled list with a left shoulder Injury. The team hopes that he can come off at some point during this weekend series in Detriot. In the field, he has made 19 errors in 86 games.

Now, as he hasn’t made any mistake in the field that has cost the Boston Red Sox the game; but that doesn’t mean it wont happen in the playoffs.

Devers looks up to Beltre. Adding the veteran would allow Cora to have Devers come off the bench as a pinch hitter in the necessary situation. Devers could learn under his idol, and those skills could help him minimize his errors in the field.

Adding a veteran presence to this locker room is never a bad thing, as the core of this team is very young. Beltre is an established MLB player and can help other players than just Devers.

Cost could be cheap

With Beltre being an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year, Texas probably wont want an arm and a leg for him. Texas could use pitching and some young players in return.

Drew Pomeranz could potentially be an option here. After making a strong start in Pawtuckett, he is set to start next Tuesday against Baltimore. This would give the Red Sox an opportunity to get rid of Pomeranz and a headache out of their mind.

The Red Sox could also offer Blake Swihart to Texas as well. Now, both of these players would be clearly an overpay, so the Sox could package one of the two with a mid level prospect from whats left of the farm.

The Boston Red Sox need to do something at the deadline. Trading with Texas for Beltre would go against the contrarian, but it could help the team now more than ever.

With Devers learning from the veteran third basemen, his defensive skills could also take a turn for the better as he continues to develop and grow as a major leaguer.
