New England Patriots: Cordarrelle Patterson wants to catch some passes
By Sam Minton
Cordarelle Patterson is known for his special team skill, but now that he is with the New England Patriots, he wants to become a solid wide receiver.
The New England Patriots are going to need a wide receiver to step up. With the lack of depth at the position, an unfamiliar face will become the driving force of the Patriots passing game. Cordarrelle Patterson is realizing the opportunity he has and working on becoming a better pass-catcher.
The Patriots traded for Patterson because he is such a great kick returner. In his 5 years in the NFL, he has brought back 5 kicks for a touchdown. Patterson has some incredible speed, which helps him break through the defense.
Patterson has been a sub-par pass catcher so far. In Patterson’s best season he only had 45 catches for 469 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Until now I expected Patterson to contribute to kick returns and if he helped out in the passing game it would just be an added bonus. Now the Patriots need him to perform.
Patterson working with the Mann
Patterson has worked with retired receivers coach Richard Mann. When you help Antonio Brown become a great receiver you must be a quality educator. Mann is focusing on improving Patterson’s ability to create separation and his release off the line of scrimmage.
Patterson has been great so far in training camp. He is making great catches and ingratiating himself to Tom Brady.
It looks like Patterson could compete to be the Patriots 3rd or 4th receiver. With Patterson having breakaway speed he could create some big plays. If he truly has improved his ability to create separation, Brady may have found his deep ball threat.
This could be the year that Cordarrelle Patterson proves he isn’t just a speedy kick returner. This is the season he proves he is a quality wide receiver.
