Boston Red Sox slugger  J.D. Martinez has a very real chance to complete the Triple Crown, something that has been done in baseball only 17 times in the past.

J.D. Martinez has been a huge addition to the Boston Red Sox this season. At the time of the signing, many people around here had their doubts and thought that the team overpaid.

Since then, Martinez has been proving everyone wrong. He was the first player in the MLB this season to drive in 100 runs and seems to hit a home run every game.

Currently, Martinez is batting .333 with 37 home runs and 104 runs batted in. He is .017 behind teammate Mookie Betts for the league lead in batting average.

More from Chowder and Champions

Martinez has a 3 home run lead on the next player behind him and has a 9 RBI cushion on the next player. There is still a month and a half left on the season, so just expect these numbers to get even higher.

J.D. Martinez would become the 18th player in MLB history to win the batting triple crown.

It would be the first since Miguel Cabrera in 2012; Cabrera would also go on to win the MVP with the Detroit Tigers that same year.

2018 would mark the 4th time in team history that a member of the Boston Red Sox has won the lucrative award. J.D. Martinez would join Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski as the only Red Sox players to win the Triple Crown.

Williams has 2 Triple Crowns (1942, 1947) and Yaz got his in 1967. Williams and Yaz are Red Sox legends, and Martinez is certainly making the case for himself to be included in that conversation.

He would be the 2nd player in the modern baseball era accomplish the feat during their first year with their new team. Hall-of-Famer Frank Robinson completed the Triple Crown in 1966 with the Baltimore Orioles after playing for the Cincinnati Reds the previous year.

Martinez has been on fire since the All-Star break of last season, and that trend certainly carried over into his first season in Boston.

J.D. Martinez has a very real chance at winning the award this season. If he is able to pull it off, I believe he should also get the MVP award as well.

Winning the Triple Crown would be quite the way to cap off a remarkable first season with this team.

The only thing that could top that would be if the Boston Red Sox also could win the World Series; but let’s be honest, they have a very real chance at winning that too.
