With free agent wide receiver Dez Bryant still looking for a new home perhaps it’s time the New England Patriots took a flyer on him.

Tom Brady to Dez Bryant has a pretty nice ring to it, doesn’t it?  Okay, before you shake your finger that the New England Patriots don’t need a player like Bryant, think about the possibilities.

Think about how dynamic a player who averaged 91 catches, 1,1311 yards and 13.7 touchdowns from 2012-14 would be in an offense orchestrated by Brady.  Furthermore, think about how much fun a rejuvenated Dez Bryant would be lined up next to Rob Gronkowski with Julian Edelman in the slot.

It could be fascinating if Bryant bought in to the Patriots system and if he was near the player he was during that dominating stretch.  Those are two big ifs, but what else do the New England Patriots have to lose?

More from Chowder and Champions

After cutting both Malcolm Mitchell and Jordan Matthews late in training camp, Brady and co. need a receiver like Bryant and the former Dallas Cowboys playmaker is desperate for a team.

Fate seems to be calling his name

Sound like fate?

It sure does.  If newly signed veteran wide receiver Eric Decker continues to look like a shell of himself in these preseason games, Bill Belichick has to begin to think about taking a shot at revitalizing the career of Bryant the same way he did with Randy Moss back in 2007.

One big reason he was able to do so was because Moss was motivated to re-establish his dominance.  Dez Bryant may have the same mindset.  After drawing almost no interest since being cut by the Cowboys, the 29-year-old receiver may have to take less money and prove himself in 2018.

What better place and opportunity to do so than New England.  He certainly seems to be warming to the idea.  In a Bleacher Report Instagram post lauding Belichick’s roster management, Bryant’s confirmed account added a comment praising the Patriots coach.

"“BB STRAGEGY is 1 in a Million,” he wrote."

Then he referenced Brady as his favorite player.

"“Tom Brady has always been my favorite player…real fact,” he continued."

While other veteran star players have tried to praise their way onto the Patriots roster, Dez Bryant actually makes sense. He’s coming off a season in which he caught 69 passes for 838 yards and six touchdowns.  That is more productive than anyone receiver on the New England Patriots active roster.

No, Bryant is not Randy Moss, but he is a similar type talent who can become a dangerous weapon once again if he finds the chemistry and magic with Tom Brady.  Of course, he could sign with the Cleveland Browns as soon as this article is posted, but until he does (if he does), the New England Patriots have to start considering taking a shot.

Worst case scenario, he doesn’t work out which won’t leave the current wide receiver group any worse than it is right now.

So come on Bill Belichick, work your magic.
