New England Patriots: Phillip Dorsett stepped up to the plate
By Sam Minton
The New England Patriots were victorious in Week 1 and may have found a receiver that can be relied upon to make some big plays.
When the news of Julian Edelman’s suspension came out, New England Patriots fans were nervous about how the team would perform. It makes sense since Edelman is Tom Brady’s No.1 target at wide receiver.
After the Patriots 27-20 victory over the Houston Texans, it appears that Brady may have a new best buddy.
Phillip Dorsett has struggled since entering the NFL. He has only 3 touchdowns in his 4-year career. Dorsett has been given a great opportunity to show that he is a good wide receiver and he took advantage on Sunday.

Dorsett had 7 catches for 66 yards and a touchdown. In the game, he showed off his amazing speed as well as some quality route running. Dorsett’s TD came late in the 2nd quarter and was demoralizing for the Texans. It’s never fun giving up a touchdown as you are about to head back to the locker room.
The catch was a perfect play. Dorsett put on the brakes and found some space in the back of the end zone. When you are that open, Brady is bound to find you.
Dorsett also showed off his speed. The Patriots love short passes. Tom Brady will just take one step back and rifle it to a receiver who takes care of the rest. This happened in the 4th quarter and Dorsett juked a Texans defender out of his shoes and got the first down.
This was an important game for Dorsett. He can now build off this performance and look to have a career year. It looks like he can be trusted by Brady.
In Week 2 the Patriots play the Jacksonville Jaguars and I think Dorsett can be successful as well. Jalen Ramsey and the Jaguars secondary will be focused on stopping Rob Gronkowski who is coming off a great game. Chris Hogan also wasn’t very successful so I expect Dorsett to get a few more targets.
Even when Julian Edelman comes back I think we will hear Phillip Dorsett’s name plenty of times. I think this will be his breakout season where he cements his role as a top receiver on the Patriots roster.
