Why the Boston Celtics should pursue Jamal Crawford

Thirty-eight-year-old Jamal Crawford is shockingly still a free agent, so should the Boston Celtics go after him?

The Boston Celtics have had a dizzying week, and might find themselves with an open roster spot.  Jamal Crawford is still out on the free agent market, which is actually pretty shocking given his resume.

So, should the C’s go after him?

I’m not really sure.  Crawford is a fantastic weapon off the bench, I mean he’s a three-time NBA sixth man of the year!  The king of the 4-point play, you wouldn’t believe he’s 38.  I’d take Crawford over a lot of young guys to put on my bench.  I love the veteran experience he would bring and the instant offense.

However, I’m not entirely sure this team needs him.

Let’s think about this for a second, with Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward back the Celtics now have more depth.  Marcus Smart and Terry Rozier are a great duo off the bench, along with second-year man Semi Ojeleye who is sure to be better this season.

Jamal Crawford averaged 10.3 points per game, along with 2.3 assists and 1.2 rebounds last season for the Minnesota Timberwolves.  He’s gotten interest from the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers.

Oddly enough, those are three of Boston’s biggest rivals.  Jamal Crawford actually played for the Golden State Warriors back in in the 2008-2009 season.

I don’t want to sign a guy just for the sake of filling a roster spot, and to me this signing might feel like that.  Knowing the Boston Celtics, they’ll keep that spot open until guys start getting bought out in the middle of the season.

Crawford has been on seven teams throughout his NBA career, and was drafted in 2000 by the Chicago Bulls.  I always feel as though whenever the Boston Celtics play against Crawford, he ends up totally torching them.  When he gets hot, he absolutely torches the nets.

Oh, and you know how his twitter handle is @JCrossover ?  Yeah, there’s a reason for that.  Jamal Crawford definitely still has moves.

He’s a legitimate threat, no doubt about it.  Jamal Crawford would be a boost, but on a team with so much guard depth, I’m not sure this is the right fit for him.  Listen, I could be wrong.  Danny Ainge could go out and sign him tomorrow, then Brad Stevens could slide him in the second unit and it could work beautifully.

I think it’s worth keeping an eye on, but I wouldn’t expect Jamal Crawford in a Boston Celtics uniform anytime soon.
