Boston Celtics: Kyrie Irving’s ‘best move’ could land him in the rafters
Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving has opened up about what he considers the “best move of his career” and this upcoming season may just prove it.
No one saw it coming. Last August, when Boston Celtics president of basketball operations shocked the world and acquired five-time All-Star Kyrie Irving, it was not only the fireworks fans have been waiting for, it brought a big-time star to the city of Boston.
But, it is not the trade itself that has intrigued the basketball world, it is why Irving wanted to escape the shadows of LeBron James that captivated NBA minds. In an interview with Bleacher Report, the star point guard talked about his decision to force his way out of Cleveland.
For one, he needed to do it for himself and is glad that it worked out the way it did.

"“I think it was the best move for my career, honestly, because it wasn’t about any particular person or anything like that,” Irving said. “It was just time. It may not have looked ‘time’ for everyone else, but for me, it was time.”"
While the Celtics weren’t on his list of targets, Irving has found himself in the best possible situation. Call it luck, but perhaps that is what was meant to happen. In August of 2017, the man who scorched the Celtics in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals became their star player.
He became a star player on a team with a collection of veterans and young, rising stars. In being part of a team that may just have five stars – himself, along with Al Horford, Jayson Tatum, Gordon Hayward, Jaylen Brown – Irving has recently expressed his desire to re-sign in Boston long-term.
Did he see this all coming?
The Boston part…no. As for the Cleveland Cavaliers current situation, Kyrie Irving saw the writing on the wall as he knew LeBron James would depart once again, this time for Hollywood.
"“Like, keep it real,” Irving said. “If I was still in Cleveland, I would be…like everything that was foreseen to happen happened.”"
The main question surfacing from what Irving has revealed is why not just stay in Cleveland? For a man who has made it known he wants his own team, that would’ve been the perfect opportunity. Without James, Kyrie Irving could’ve displayed that he was the real force behind the title the team won.
With Kevin Love still on the team, Irving could’ve lured Jimmy Butler to the team to create a new big three in the city of Cleveland.
Boston Celtics fans are certainly happy things worked out the way they did and so is Irving. The team is not only loaded with talent but is built to win now as well as the future. He hit the jackpot when demanding a trade out of Cleveland and now has an opportunity to be the face of the Celtics.
If he can at least replicate the 24.4 points he scored with the Celtics last season, stay healthy and help the team take the Golden State Warriors to the brink, if not win it, he will make No. 11 a memorable number in the city of Boston and perhaps up in the rafters.
