Boston Bruins: Old man Zdeno Chara reaches yet another Boston milestone
By Sam Minton
Zdeno Chara played in his 900th career game for the Boston Bruins. Big Z will be remembered as one of the many great defensemen to wear black and gold.
Some people may forget that Zdeno Chara didn’t start his career with the Boston Bruins. I can’t blame them, Chara’s been in Boston forever. On Thursday night Chara played his 900th game as a member of the Boston Bruins.
Chara came to Boston in 2006. That’s the same year that Twitter was invented. The Boston Bruins defense would never be the same.
Having a guy like Chara on your team is a game changer. In your own zone, he can bully guys around and clear the crease. His long stick makes it hard to get by him cleanly. He can easily poke pucks away.

In the offensive zone, Chara is able to deliver rockets on net. It’s really a testament to the talent of NHL goaltenders that Chara doesn’t score every time he shoots. Chara holds the record for hardest shot with his shot going 108.8 mph.
In 900 games, Chara has tallied 139 goals and 316 assists. These numbers make Chara one of the best Bruins defensemen in team history. Among defensemen Chara is 3rd all-time in goals and points and is 4th in assists.
There is a good chance Chara gets his number retired in Boston. He helped bring a Stanley Cup to Boston and won a Norris Trophy in the 2008-09 season.
Even today Chara is still a quality defenseman. Chara may struggle at times to cover the faster skaters of today, but he still belongs on the top line. He is still one of the Bruins best true defenseman.
Because of that, I think Zdeno Chara will be the last Bruins player to wear No.33. Hopefully Big Z will be able to bring the Bruins another Stanley Cup before that day comes.
