Boston Bruins: Offside challenges are the worst thing in hockey
By Sam Minton
The Boston Bruins had a chance to change the momentum of the game in the 2nd period of their Saturday night game, but video review took a goal away from the B’s. Offside challenges are ruining the game of hockey.
The Boston Bruins were defeated by the Montreal Canadiens 3-0 on Saturday night. It was the B’s first loss at home and they deserved it.
Tuukka Rask was awful in net once again and the Bruins were unable to crack Carey Price. Well actually they did crack him but a goal was called back.
Anders Bjork entered Montreal’s zone (or so we thought) and dropped the puck to Ryan Donato who rifled a shot by Price. It was a great goal and got the Bruins back in the game.

Montreal decided to challenge the play and it was ruled that Bjork was offsides. Even though the call was right I hate this (and not just because the Bruins lost a goal).
You know how in the NFL how you always have to wait to see if a flag was thrown or to see the replay to make sure a play was actually a touchdown? Well now that has spread to the NHL and it is awful.
Now I understand what the NHL is trying to do. They want to get every call right, but at what cost? A coaches challenge just disrupts the flow of the game and takes the human element out of hockey.
I don’t believe Bjork entering the zone a millimeter before the puck really had an effect on the play. Donato just shot the puck and got it by Price. Bjork wasn’t screening the goaltender or anything.
The NHL offsides challenge is like challenging balls and strikes with an MLB umpire. Some decisions just have to be left to the officials on the field.
