New England Patriots: Rex Burkhead can spice up running game
By Sam Minton
Rex Burkhead will soon be back on the field for the New England Patriots. With New England’s offense struggling, Burkhead may be the added piece to make everything start working again.
The New England Patriots offense hasn’t been great as of late. They have struggled to score even against some sub-par talent. So it is a welcome sign to see Rex Burkhead back on the field practicing.
All signs are pointing to Burkhead returning in Week 13 which will help New England’s offense out. The Patriots backfield is full of one-dimensional players. Sony Michel will run the ball down your throat, and James White will catch a ton of passes. Burkhead isn’t confined to one of these categories.
Burkhead is capable of lining up out wide or in the backfield and he is good at both. He won’t be dropping passes as Sony Michel did early in the season.

The only problem that Burkhead has is that he always seems to get hurt. He has shown some great ability, but it always seems to get ruined by some sort of injury.
Burkhead will also take some of the workload off of Sony Michel. Michel has injury problems of his own. New England can’t drive him into the ground. They need to be careful. He could be New England’s feature back for years to come.
These two could become a dangerous duo in the backfield. Burkhead is more of a skill back who is looking to make quality cuts and bounce for a big gain while Michel isn’t afraid to run you over.
They could keep defenses on their toes and open up the opportunity for big plays to guys like Josh Gordon and Julian Edelman.
It will be interesting to see how New England uses Rex Burkhead, but his talents can keep guys fresh and ensure that the defense can’t relax on any play. He just might be the one tweak that fixes New England’s offense.
