Boston Red Sox rumors: Dave Dombrowski isn’t budging
By Sam Minton
Dave Dombrowski is staying firm and it looks less and less likely that Craig Kimbrel will return to the Boston Red Sox
If you bought a Craig Kimbrel jersey last year I have some bad news for you. Even as Craig Kimbrel’s value decreases I don’t expect him to come back to the Boston Red Sox.
Kimbrel asked for a humongous contract. Especially when you consider he is 30 years old. The decline is beginning for the veteran closer.
Last season Kimbrel did rather well racking up 42 saves and 96 strikeouts in 62.1 innings pitched.

Still, it looks like he won’t be coming back to Boston. Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski said that the team isn’t looking to break the bank to acquire a closer.
This is just part of the business that is Major League Baseball. You can’t bring everyone back. When you overpay and keep everyone you end up in some rough contract situations and stunt the long term success of your team.
It is hard to get rid of some players after a succesful World Series run. Dombrowski is proving that he is becoming a smart executive and is building the team for future success. The Red Sox could fall apart if Dombrowski gives out deals like they are candy.
I would expect the Red Sox to use some in house options at the important position out of the bullpen. Ryan Brasier and Matt Barnes are leading the race right now. Both of these guys aren’t that experienced but it would be interesting to see what they could do with a full season.
There also won’t be a ton of pressure on these guys in their first full year as a closer. The Red Sox’s have a stacked lineup. When you have guys like JD Martinez and Mookie Betts it makes life a lot easier for closers.
You have to give Dave Dombrowski credit. He is sticking to his guns and trusting the guys currently on the roster.
