Boston Celtics: Jaylen Brown continues sturdy play off bench
Solid play from the bench has the Boston Celtics achieving better results and one of the chief reasons for this is Jaylen Brown.
In his third year, Jaylen Brown has once again found focus and purpose, helping stabilize the once unsteady bench of the Boston Celtics.
Even more impressive is the fact he’s done so with the constant buzz of trade rumors that swirled around the Celtics over the past week.
This is not to say Brown paid attention to the many scenarios played out in the media and by fans, many of which involved dreams of Anthony Davis ending up in Celtic green. Brown still showed up, did his job, and continued to show he’s embraced his role as bench player.

The bench as a whole has improved over the past few weeks, with Terry Rozier and Daniel Theis leading the barrage alongside Brown.
Rozier has been much better about carrying over the same energy he has when a starter into coming off of the bench.
Theis is averaging 13.3 points per game in February, including a 20-point performance against the Los Angeles Lakers. Theis is also 17-20 from the field in three games this month.
It’s Brown and his play, however, giving the Celtics a boost. Brown’s contribution has always been integral as to how far Boston would go in 2018-19. Now as a key leader off of the bench — plus a spot start here and there — Brown’s role is cemented. And with it, the potential for him to do fantastic things.
Brown returning to form
Finding a new role, Brown had struggles in the early season.
Scoring was down the first two months and even in December, when Brown had stretch of hitting the double-digit mark in scoring three times in nine games, his play was average.
A 30-point performance on New Year’s Eve in a loss at San Antonio seemed to change all of that.
Brown has been shooting the ball better with each passing week, especially over the last ten games. His play has been a big reason the Celtics are 8-2 in their last ten games and 14-5 since the start of 2019.
Averaging 25 minutes per game (over the last ten games), Brown is dropping 15.2 points. He’s shooting 48.3 percent from the field, five times shooting 55 percent or higher in this stretch.

Brown has eight straight games scoring in double digits, including an 18-point game against the Lakers while shooting 7-10 from the field.
He’s also been impressive on the defensive side with 14 steals in the last ten games.
Being a scorer and providing solid defense as part of the second unit is what Brown is being asked to do and he’s finally responding. Rozier and Gordon Hayward, two players expected to provide instant offense off the bench, have been inconsistent in this department.
Brown is still a little spotty from three-point land, connecting on only 33 percent this season. However, his overall shooting percentage reminds me a lot of what he was doing during Boston’s playoff run in the spring of 2018.
Continuing to be a leader of the bench is a must and, if the the last 20 games have proven anything, Brown is up to the task and then some.
