The New England Patriots took a chance with Josh Gordon in 2018 and it almost paid off.

Would the New England Patriots have won Super Bowl LIII with Josh Gordon?

Considering his talent, the easy answer to that would be yes.  However, because of his absence in the offense, the Patriots did have to shift to more of a power running team. One could argue that having Gordon on the field would have made Tom Brady more pass happy.

That may not have been the case because the Patriots were running the ball even with Gordon on the field during the season.  In fact, the talented wide receiver adjusted his game to fit into what the team wanted to do on offense.

More from Chowder and Champions

In catching 68 passes for 720 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games, Josh Gordon proved he can still be productive in any offense.  He was on his way to a 1,000-yard season if he was not suspended again following the Week 15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

While the production was there, what Gordon proved is that he could commit to the game of football and be a team player.  That was one of the knocks on him with the Cleveland Browns.  New England Patriots coaches and players loved him.  They praised his commitment and the way he was able to pick up a complicated offense.

Yes, his off the field issues negate that for most as it did prove he is unreliable, but the Patriots knew that part when they traded him for a fifth-round pick.  They took a risk that almost paid off.

Imagine if Josh Gordon was available for the playoffs.  Imagine him on the field with Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski and James White.  The way the offense started to look when they had all those players healthy on the field would’ve against scored them more than 13 points in Super Bowl LIII.

That outlook is not just about the talent Gordon would’ve added.  It is more because of what he proved he was willing to do to help his team win.  A rout runner with size and speed in the New England Patriots offense is a dangerous weapon for Tom Brady to have.

He could have that again in 2019.

Gordon could be back

Yes, Josh Gordon could get another shot in the NFL.

According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, the man known as “Flash” Gordon could be back for training camp if he follows his treatment plan.  This comes after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he would consider a reinstatement.

If that does end up being the case, it means he could finish what he started in New England.  He is a restricted free agent, so the Patriots could match any offer he gets, but the question is will they be interested in taking another shot?

With how the staff, teammates and particularly Tom Brady feel about Gordon, it would appear the team is willing to give it another go if the money is right.  Despite his slip up, Josh Gordon did start to fit in, and the New England Patriots might be his only fit.

There are not many teams in the NFL that may be willing to take a chance with him. They certainly won’t be willing to shell out major cash for him.  If Gordon gets one more chance, there is high probability it would be in a Patriots uniform.
