With the NFL offseason here, Odell Beckham Jr. to the New England Patriots rumors are swirling once again.

It could be NFL withdrawal, or it could just be wishful thinking.  Whatever it is, the idea of Odell Beckham Jr. in a New England Patriots uniform catching the ball from Tom Brady has most fans dreaming wildly.

Similar to the Antonio Brown situation with the Pittsburgh Steelers, it is a dream scenario that is highly unlikely due to the financial burden of it (more on the Giants side than the Patriots).

No matter how much Beckham Jr. may be disgruntled in New York, it makes no sense for the Giants to trade him this offseason.

Sure, like Brown, he could try to force his way out, but the New York football Giants would have to take a $16 million cap hit if they trade Beckham prior to June 1, which isn’t all that bad considering $4 million would be dead cap space this season.

The timing of a possible trade would of course come way prior to that considering it would take possible multiple draft picks for any team to ply the elite receiver away from the Giants.

So, even if Beckham Jr. does not want to play for the Giants, the team’s best interest is not to oblige, but this is one rumor that is going to pick up steam especially with this prediction from Jay Glazer of the Athletic:

"“I predict Odell Beckham Jr. gets traded this off-season.  I think that’s bold enough.”"

And then there was an Instagram post by Tom Brady that had Patriots Nation wildly dreaming when Beckham Jr. left a comment saying: “Love u brother.”

Whoa!

Then again, what top receiver wouldn’t love to play with the GOAT?

Why would a trade work?

Due to Bill Belichick’s relationship with the New York Giants and Odell Beckham Jr.’s apparent admiration for the New England Patriots (particularly Tom Brady), if there is any possibility of a deal, it could happen, especially if the Giants just want to rid themselves of a headache.

Forget Beckham Jr’s character for just a minute.  The man caught 77 passes for 1,052 yards for a team that struggled for the most part offensively and featured its running game.  Just imagine what he would do paired up with Tom Brady?

Not only would his contract be manageable for the Patriots, a shift to New England to the Patriot Way could change the direction of his career.  He would have to adapt the “We instead of Me” approach to football, but he seems willing to do so if it does mean consistently winning.

New England Patriots fans have seen Randy Moss do it for the most part and recently Josh Gordon.  Now, Gordon didn’t last the full season, but his issues were deeper than just character issues.  The way he committed to the team in the locker room and on the field is the key focus.

With multiple high-round draft picks and a need for a deep threat receiver, the New England Patriots can absolutely make Glazier’s bold prediction a reality.

What it really comes down to is how the 26-year-old receiver matures.  If Belichick and the Patriots see a player that can help them win next season, expect some offseason fireworks from the defending Super Bowl champions.  If they don’t…well, Odell Beckham Jr. can continue admiring Tom Brady from afar.
