New England Patriots Rumors: The one way Colin Kaepernick makes sense
The New England Patriots are being linked as a possible suitor of Colin Kaepernick, but there is really one role that would make sense for the veteran quarterback.
Take the political and social ramifications out of it for a minute. Would Colin Kaepernick make sense playing for the New England Patriots on strictly what he could bring to the team with his physical ability as a veteran quarterback?
With Tom Brady on tract to play till the age of 45, the Patriots aren’t in need of a starting quarterback.
Then again, if something should happen to Brady or if he suddenly fell off that cliff Max Kellerman has predicted for the past 4 or 5 seasons, then current backup Brian Hoyer or 2018 seventh-round pick Danny Etling would present a nightmare scenario.
That’s where the potential of a Colin Kaepernick comes in and a reason why his attorney, Mark Geragos, feel like the New England Patriots could be one of the teams looking to give the controversial quarterback his next shot in the NFL.
Realistic?
Probably not, but you can never say never when it comes to the Patriots and who may or may not be on their radar.
Appearing on CNN Saturday night a day after his client and Eric Reid settled with the NFL in their collusion case, Geragos offered the following which has the rumor mill blazing:

"“I think you’re going to see…within the next two weeks that somebody is going to step up and do the right thing, and you want me to predict who? Besides the [Carolina] Panthers, it would not surprise me if [Patriots owner] Bob Kraft makes a move.”"
Now, it if Robert Kraft ran his team like Jerry Jones runs the Dallas Cowboys, then yes, perhaps he would sign Colin Kaepernick just because he likes his game.
But, Bill Belichick runs the personnel decisions and that is a potential marriage no one sees working unless the Patriots coach sees some versatility in Kaepernick that could help the team win.
The one way Kaepernick makes sense
With more than a handful of NFL teams in need of a starting quarterback, it is highly unlikely the New England Patriots would be in on Colin Kaepernick.
If they were, it would be the same level of interest they had in Tim Tebow. They will simply bring him in to camp to see what he could do besides playing quarterback that could help the team win.
Although backup quarterbacks don’t get much of a chance to play when Tom Brady is healthy, they do play big roles in preparing the team for big games. Brian Hoyer was key in helping the team win Super Bowl LIII because of the role he played in practice. Colin Kaepernick would have to be willing to serve a similar role or even show he could play another position.
With young, mobile quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes II and Russell Wilson at the forefront of the league, Kaepernick could help in practice mimicking those types of quarterbacks. Given the fact that he is on the other side of 30 and haven’t played in the NFL since 2017, a backup role may be his path back to a starting role in the NFL.
Otherwise, he doesn’t make much sense in New England unless the unthinkable did happen with Tom Brady. Even then, there are other quarterbacks out there and available that would fit more into the system Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels likes to run.
In other words, Colin Kaepernick will not be wearing a New England Patriots uniform for football reasons. With that being said, the political and social ramifications wouldn’t impact interest if there was something they believed he could bring to the table.
