The New England Patriots may need a new left tackle once free agency comes and goes because Trent Brown projects to be a big value.

For the second consecutive offseason, the New England Patriots may watch their left tackle get a huge payday in free agency.

After being acquired in an offseason trade with the San Francisco 49ers, left tackle Trent Brown made the loss of Nate Solder not only less big of a loss, but he actually played bigger than the long-time Patriots left tackle both physically and in size.

An underrated move at the time, the defending Super Bowl champions found a player who played at a high level during the season and throughout the playoffs.  Acquired while still on a rookie deal, Trent Brown raised the value of his worth above what the Patriots may be willing to pay.

Entering free agency in March, expect Brown to cash in and more than likely it won’t be with the team he grew into a big-time offensive lineman with.  While he does hope to stay, he knows it’s a business and looking for his next landing spot to be a place where he plays for a very long time.

"“Hopefully, it’s somewhere where I can build some longevity, somewhere that will be a great place and a great fit schematically, in the locker room, on the field and also a great fit for my family as well,” Brown said in an interview on Adam Schefter’s podcast."

When asked if that place was New England, the former seventh-round draft pick said he would love to stay with the Patriots but didn’t offer any commitment.

The reason why he didn’t commit is because he knows it’s a business and he also knows the money he could command may be too much for the Patriots to offer, especially since they have a backup plan in place in 2018 first-round pick Isaiah Wynn.

Franchise tag?

Ideally, the New England Patriots could use the franchise tag on Tom Brady’s blind side, but the $14 million they would have to pay him in 2019 is a hefty cost considering the team initially drafted Wynn to be the left tackle.

The risk the Patriots will take in letting Trent Brown walk is that Wynn, coming off a torn Achilles, may not be fully back to strength come the start of the season.  Having a player like Brown for just one more season would allow time for the Georgia Bulldogs alum to get back to full strength and make the position his own.

Then again, this is the New England Patriots we are talking about.  Just like they found a cheaper option in Brown, they will and can find another option if Isaiah Wynn is not back to full strength and ready to go to start the season, especially with the legendary Dante Scarnecchia coaching.

In summary, Trent Brown has played himself into a big contract whether he stays or goes.  He knows the value of his worth and is ready for the big pay day.  If it’s as big as his huge 6-foot-8, 380-pound frame, then a new left tackle will be protecting Tom Brady in 2019.
