Phillip Dorsett had a limited role with the New England Patriots, but the team is giving him another shot, re-signing the wideout to a 1-year deal.

The New England Patriots wide receiver corps is going under a bit of a change. A trimming of the fat if you will.

Last season wasn’t a great one for the two Patriots wide receivers who are now free agents. Chris Hogan would have done better sitting on his couch for some parts of the season. Tom Brady basically acted like he didn’t exist.

Then there is Phillip Dorsett. Last season seemed like a prime chance for Dorsett to make a name for himself. With Julian Edelman out for 4 games it seemed like Dorsett would get a ton of balls thrown his way.

Dorsett did have decent numbers, but by the end of the season he was not even appearing in games.

Now it appears that Dorsett is getting a 2nd chance. The Patriots re-signed him to a one year deal.

What will Dorsett’s role be next season?

We will have to see what the New England Patriots roster looks like before predicting his role. One would have to think it would grow, but the Patriots could make a trade or draft a receiver in the draft.

Right now I would say that Dorsett could be the 2nd or 3rd wideout on the roster. This also depends on if Josh Gordon plays in 2019.

Dorsett’s deal is an opportunity to prove he is worth an investment. If he struggles again I don’t think he will get another shot.

Dorsett should aim for eclipsing 500 yards and hopefully getting more than a handful of touchdowns. With Tom Brady as your quarterback that shouldn’t be too hard.

I like this move by the New England Patriots. Dorsett is still a young player. It’s worth the risk to see what he can do. If he plays well this season the Patriots can lock him up until he is 30 years old.

This is a good deal for Dorsett as well. He is betting on himself. If Dorsett exceeds expectations he could end up being paid handsomely.

There seems to be only one way to describe the New England Patriots offseason so far. Not the flashiest moves, but they are smart and calculated.

Next. Jason McCourty re-signing is smart move. dark

So hopefully 2019 will finally be the season that Phillip Dorsett breaks out and makes a name for himself.
