The Boston Red Sox struggled early on but are finally headed in the right direction after sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays over the weekend.

Normally a 3 game sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays wouldn’t be anything special, but this Boston Red Sox season is different.

The Rays have actually gotten off to a hot start. They are at the top of the AL East even after getting swept by the Red Sox.

More from Chowder and Champions

On the opposite side of things, the Red Sox couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start. The team looked like they forgot how to play baseball.

The starting rotation looked incapable of winning games while guys like Mookie Betts and Jackie Bradley Jr. were making mistakes you should only see in Little League.

Now the team is doing well. J.D. Martinez has been one of the lone bright spots so far this season. He has been carrying the Red Sox’s bats this season. Martinez has a .350 batting average with 4 home runs and 7 RBIs.

The Sox have also gotten some surprising production from Mitch Moreland. I didn’t know if anyone expected him to be driving in runs at this pace. Moreland currently leads the team in home runs (7) and RBIs (14).

The starting pitching has also struggled a lot this season. Even with his new $145 million contract, Chris Sale couldn’t buy a win at the moment. Sale is 0-4 with an 8.50 ERA.

In a surprising turn of events, the bullpen has been rather reliable. Relief pitcher Marcus Walden has the most wins on the team (3) and Ryan Brasier has looked great in the closer role with 6 saves so far this season.

Next. David Price leading team to a resurrection. dark

So hopefully the Red Sox can keep this win streak going and get back on top of the AL East. If not they may dig themselves a hole that they can’t dig out of.
