Boston Red Sox Rumors: Noah Syndergaard in Boston would be fascinating
One dream MLB Trade Deadline scenario for the Boston Red Sox has Noah Syndergaard joining Chris Sale and David Price in the starting rotation.
Could Boston Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski pull off a blockbuster deal at the MLB Trade Deadline Wednesday?
Well he could, but it is unlikely that he will.
That doesn’t mean Red Sox Nation can’t dream, especially after MLB Network’s Mark DeRosa put a trade scenario on the table that would bring both New York Mets starter Noah Syndergaard and reliever Edwin Diaz to Boston in exchange for Andrew Benintendi and a top prospect.

Realizing Benintendi would be the piece hard to give up, here is what DeRosa said, as transcribed by WEEI.
"“Hear me out on this, Boston: I know you love Andrew Benintendi – Michael Chavis, J.D. Martinez, where did Steve Pearce disappear to? We can make it work offensively. But if you put [Noah] Syndergaard in between [Chris] Sale and [David] Price – [Rick] Porcello is walking at the end of the year. You get your bullpen piece and a controllable starter for next year as well, with [Nathan] Eovaldi. You get dangerous quick.”"
With the Red Sox greatest need being bullpen help, Diaz has been the piece of that proposed deal most talked about the last couple of days. But reports have surfaced throwing ice on that hot burning rumor.
The fascinating connection in all of this is Benintendi, who the Mets reportedly have interest in. As good as Edwin Diaz could be, the greater intrigue would obviously be Syndergaard. He is the player the Red Sox should consider giving up an everyday player and a top prospect for, even if that player is an Andrew Benintendi or Michael Chavis.
Like DeRosa points out, the Boston Red Sox have more than enough offensive power to depart with either of those players. Adding a hard-throwing stud like Noah Syndergaard, even with his 4.33 ERA this season, would make the Sox starting rotation very tough if they can get David Price and Chris Sale back towards the top of their game.
Add how effective Eduardo Rodriguez has been, and the rotation would match up against any other contender in the American League.
That alone should have Dombrowski at least thinking about pulling off a blockbuster. That dreaded luxury tax threshold would be the part whispering at him not to even consider such a deal due to Syndergaard’s current contract, but why not go for the jugular?
Yes, bullpen help would still an issue, but adding another quality starter at least lessens the wear on the bullpen and could push another starter like Rick Porcello into the bullpen.
Remember how effective both Nathan Eovaldi and Porcello were in the playoffs?
In summary, if there is a deal possible that could bring Noah Syndergaard to Boston, do it Dombrowski. Even you can get it down without parting with Andrew Benintendi…all the better.
