New England Patriots Rumors: Stefon Diggs situation worth monitoring
With Stefon Diggs frustrated in Minnesota, rumors are swirling about the New England Patriots being a potential destination.
When the New England Patriots needed a tight end, it was Minnesota Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph and his contract situation that was worth watching over the summer.
Now, another Vikings playmaker has the attention of Patriots fan.
Yes, 25-year-old wide receiver Stefon Diggs is the latest wide receiver star to be frustrating in his current situation and of course there are rumored links to the Patriots.
Well, maybe those rumors are mostly wishful thinking amongst Patriots Nation, but there is always some truth to rumors. Just ask Diggs, who has made it clear he is not happy in the Vikings offense and is not really throwing much water on rumors that he wants to be traded.

"“I said there’s truth to all rumors,” Diggs said when asked if he wanted to be traded, via NFL.com. “What I mean by that…there’s a lot of speculation of me being frustrated. Of course being a receiver and wanting to have success and wanting to win. If you’re not winning of course you’ll be frustrated. That’s my answer.”"
The perfect remedy to all that is of course catching the ball from a quarterback like Tom Brady and playing with a winning organization like the defending Super Bowl champions, but is that even possible given Diggs’ contract?
Beyond the money, a football question is whether Stefon Diggs can buy into a system where he may not get a ton of targets on any given Sunday. Would winning trump his individual statistics?
That is something Bill Belichick would explore if they something found the cap space to bring on a highly talented receiver who just signed a five-year, $72 million extension with the Vikings last offseason.
Unlikely, but if Belichick or even Tom Brady believes a player can help, there is some salary cap maneuvering the team will do to make it happen. Recent proof is the Antonio Brown experiment.
Although it ultimately didn’t work out due to Brown’s off-the-field drama, the fact the Patriots even brought in a receiver considered the best in the league means they do want to surround Brady with some elite talent along with Josh Gordon and Julian Edelman.
A young receiver like Stefon Diggs would certainly give Brady another elite option in an offense suddenly struggling to get things going. Diggs wanting out of Minnesota and the Patriots needing a receiver seem a bit poetic.
Julian Edelman on trade rumors
As much as the New England Patriots players ignore the outside noise, they also definitely hear it.
Appearing on the Greg Hill Show Friday morning, veteran wide receiver Julian Edelman was asked about the Stefon Diggs rumors and gave a very Patriots-like answer about having confidence in the receiver group the team currently has.
"“I am just worried about me and what I need to do to help this team,” Edelman said, as transcribed by WEEI. “That is not part of my job is to think of those things or do those types of things. I can only worry about what I can control, and what I can control is how I prepare and how I go about my work. That is what I am focused on. We got the players in the room that I think, ‘Hey, we’ll be alright.’ That is not my call, or anything like that.”"
The Patriots do have 2019 first-round draft pick N’Keal Harry eligible to return after Week 9, but with Edelman and Josh Gordon a little banged up, the team is an injury away from desperately having to make a move.
In what could be the last season Tom Brady plays in a New England Patriots uniform, ownership and even Bill Belichick will do what it takes to get him the players he needs to make life a bit easier. The Stefon Diggs situation is worth monitoring and you can never count the Patriots out as far as a potential trade destination.
