If Tom Brady takes his services elsewhere, the New England Patriots could have an option in Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.

When it comes to New England Patriots and quarterbacks, ESPN “First Take” personality Max Kellerman is the last person fans would take seriously, given his many premature Tom Brady falling off the cliff takes.

However, Kellerman may be on to something with his latest of idea of who the Patriots should target if Brady were to take the money and run during free agency.  While everyone from Andy Dalton to Cam Newton has been floated out there, this name Kellerman brings up could do some damage in New England under the guidance of Bill Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

That name is veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Not to give full credit to Max Kellerman, this name has been tossed out there before.  But the Detroit Lions quarterback may enter the heavy rumor mill if the Patriots and Tom Brady decide to part ways.

Brady fans don’t want to think of such a thing, but listen to what the “First Take” co-host had to say:

"“They should go get Matthew Stafford.  Stafford was great this year until he got hurt.  He was great.  He wasn’t OK.  He was MVP caliber,” Kellerman said, as transcribed by NESN.  “He has always been a top-five talent, and he’s never quite gotten those results.  Give him to Bill Belichick, and let’s see what happens.”"

Given his talent and experience, Stafford would at the very least keep the New England Patriots relevant for the next few years if he has the offensive talent around him.

Some would say the same about Brady even at the age of 42, but Matthew Stafford does have a bigger arm and at this point of both quarterbacks’ careers would be considered an upgrade.

Would the Detroit Lions be willing to give up on the former No. 1 overall pick?

That would be the burning question in this scenario, but given their high draft position, they could decide to start anew with a talent like Tua Tagovalioa or even Joe Burrow if he falls to the No. 3 spot.

The latter option could lead the former Patriots defensive coordinator and current Lions head coach Matt Patricia to at least entertain moving Stafford.  As a New England Patriots fan, it’s not something you want to think about, but the idea has Boston sports hater Max Kellerman very excited which may or may not be such a great thing for those who have listen to his anti-Brady takes in the past.

"“Stafford with Belichick, I would love to see that,” Kellerman continued.  “Meantime, the New England Patriots and the Detroit Lions have done deals before.  And because the cupboard is bare once Tom Brady leaves, survey the landscape, who’s going to be available?  Cam Newton? Matthew Stafford?  Start thinking about the guys. …An elite talent with Bill Belichick as coach? Whoa.”"

Any idea of this trade would depend on the development of Jarrett Stidham and where the team thinks he is.

As far as Bill Belichick with an elite talent.  Sorry to burst your bubble Max Kellerman, he has had an elite talent for the last two decades.  But definitely an interesting idea that is not that ridiculous considering the source.
