Following a season with minimal production from the tight end position, the New England Patriots may want to take a shot at Greg Olsen.

A Pro Bowl tight end could revive the tight end position for the New England Patriots and his name is not Rob Gronkowski.

While those Gronkowski coming out of retirement rumors will swirl once again, the team may kick the tires on another Drew Rosenhaus client.

According to the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, the team and veteran tight end Greg Olsen have decided to part ways after nine seasons making the 13-year NFL veteran a free agent going into the offseason.

More from Chowder and Champions

At 34 years of age, one may wonder if the three-time Pro Bowler has anything left in the tank, but after the Patriots lured 38-year-old Ben Watson out of retirement last season, they are one team willing to find out and why not after Greg Olsen hauled in 52 receptions for 597 yards in the 2019 NFL season.

What that proves is he can still perform on the field physically, but is he there mentally?

Following the mutual decision to part ways, the veteran tight end left the door open on other NFL opportunities, which includes a passion to continue playing the game of football.

"“At this time, I have not closed the door on any potential career options,” Olsen wrote, via Twitter.  “I still have the love of football in my heart and will explore all opportunities presented to me.”"

There will certainly be teams interested in the services of Greg Olsen, including the New England Patriots and they should.  Olsen is not only a reliable target on the field, he encompasses the type of veteran leadership Bill Belichick relishes from players on the downside of their career.

Like Alge Crumpler back in 2010, Olsen would be the perfect veteran presence to come in and help young tight ends as Crumpler did with rookie tight end Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez at the time.

Of course, the caveat in any potential union between the New England Patriots and Greg Olsen will be whether or not Tom Brady returns to the team.  With a passion to win a Super Bowl before his career is over, Olsen just may be tempted to play with one of the best.

And then there’s of course the fact that his agent is Drew Rosenhaus.  The agent of retired star Rob Gronkowski has a positive relationship with the Patriots and will certainly market Olsen to the team knowing it is one of their biggest needs going into the NFL offseason.
