Boston Red Sox: Chris Sale benefitting from extra rest
By Sam Minton
With Opening Day pushed back two weeks, the Boston Red Sox will get some extra rest and no player needs it more than Chris Sale.
Sports have been put on pause with leagues around the globe being suspended due to the COVID-19 outbreak. That means the Boston Red Sox won’t be starting their season for a while.
While baseball might not be the most pressing issue, there are some ramifications to the suspension of Spring Training and the subsequent news that Opening Day would be pushed back. That means some players on the Red Sox will get some much needed rest.
Without a doubt, the player that needs the rest the most is Chris Sale.
Sale has been dealing with health issues ever since the start of the season. He entered Spring Training with an illness and then his elbow issues arose once again.
For a second it seemed like Sale was going to need Tommy John surgery. Luckily that didn’t end up being the case. Still, it looked like Sale would be missing the start of the season.
So to look at things with a glass half full, this extra rest will be good for Sale. He won’t be throwing (at least that would be the smart thing) so he will be saving some of that precious arm strength.
We have seen Sale lose steam towards the end of the season. He has struggled to stay healthy and has performed poorly as the season got deeper.
Ever since Sale has joined the Boston Red Sox his innings pitched has continually gone down. Last season was his worse as a pro.
So without a doubt, Chris Sale will benefit from the extra rest and hopefully that will mean a much better performance from him whenever the MLB season does start.
