If the New England Patriots look to find a quarterback later in the draft, Navy’s Malcolm Perry checks off a lot of boxes for a revamped offense.

The New England Patriots need an offensive overhaul in 2020 to avoid a top-to-bottom landing with a thud post-Tom Brady departure.

Merely inserting Jarrett Stidham or any other more conventional quarterback into the existing offense is a prescription for mediocrity or worse.  Changes must be made.

An article outlines how a reconstructed of the Patriots’ offense might look after the 2020 NFL draft in two weeks. Key elements of that offense are a clear departure from the past.

For the past 20 years, the Patriots’ offense has been guided by a great, stand-up, accurate, immobile but stealthy pocket passer with a penchant for winning.

That quarterback is gone and the system he ran should be scrapped altogether and replaced with a newer model. Sort of like replacing a vintage 20-year old Jaguar with a Kia Stinger. The Jaguar has been traded in and the new Stinger with 365 horsepower can be ready to replace it.

Never heard of a Stinger?

That’s the point. The type of offense I’m suggesting is new and, out-of-character here in New England. But it could be a game-changer if the Patriots are willing to be bold, creatively innovative and smart.

I have outlined that such an offense will need a new generation quarterback. A dual-threat type who can both pass and run equally well. Think Lamar Jackson. I have also said I thought just the right guy may be available to the Patriots in the first round in two weeks, Jalen Hurts. He’d be the perfect new cornerstone.

New England Patriots new offense needs exciting and versatile weapons

With Jalen Hurts as the foundation piece, the New England Patriots can be poised for success, maybe as soon as this season.

With Hurts in the fold, throw away the old playbook predicated on a statuesque and accurate quarterback with a lightning release who’s pinpoint accuracy shredded most defenses. It will be replaced with a new dynamic, exciting version based on mobility, versatility, innovation and stealth.

I’ve suggested players like Lynn Bowden II of Kentucky as a great fit for that new offense. He’s a multi-faceted talent who can beat you in different ways. I’m now suggesting a similar talent who can do the same, Navy quarterback, Malcolm Perry.

One reason why a Midshipman makes sense for the Patriots is their head coach’s affinity for Navy and Navy players. Joe Cardona, the Patriots’ current excellent long snapper is a graduate of Annapolis. Bill Belichick loves Navy players. Another factor is that Perry is just a darn good football player.

Malcolm Perry, dynamic ability in a smaller player

Perry played a running quarterback at Navy but is projected to wide receiver in the NFL by NFL.com. Again, a perfect fit. He can really run the ball and yards-after-the catch should be a big plus.

In addition, he’s another multi-faceted guy who can be utilized in a new stealth offense by the New England Patriots where multiple skill players can befuddle you on any given play.

NFL.com puts Perry at 5’9″ tall and weighing in at 189 pounds and has him running a not so fast 4.63 40-yard dash. Not  fast, but that’s not the point. They point to his key asset, versatility,

"“Perry started the first five games of the 2018 season at quarterback before moving to slot back for the rest of the year (172-1,087-6.3, seven TDs rushing; 9 of 25, 222 yards, two TDs passing in 13 starts).”"

NFL.com lists some other key aspects of Perry’s game that would fit the new Patriots’ offense to a T,

"Elected by teammates to highly regarded team captain spotInstant gadget option who is very smart and toughUndersized but tough runner for short-yardage option packageHas some slot receiver experienceLow center of gravity enhances change of directionHands catcher, reaching out to meet the ballMakes an effort to find positional blocking dutiesStick-and-go wiggle to make first tackler missTwenty career kick returns averaging 24.6 yards per return"

Team captain. Check. Gadget option. Check. Tough runner. Check. Hands catcher. Check. Kick returner. Big check. Perry would be a no-brainer asset for a new Patriots’ offense that is predicated less on stationary passing and more on mobility, stealth and innovation.

Bleacher Report notes that Perry carried the ball 29 times and gained a whopping 304 yards against Navy’s archrival, the United State’s Military Academy (aka Army) last season. Nice way to put an exclamation mark on your college career! Big game player.

Check+++!

Should the New England Patriots decide to move forward with a dynamic new offense and implement a complete revolution in their offensive strategy, Malcolm Perry will be a welcome addition on the third day of the draft.
