The New England Patriots are looking for a new starting quarterback and former NFL MVP Cam Newton is out there for the taking.

A head coach in Bill Belichick who is out to prove he can take the New England Patriots to the promise land without Tom Brady, and a veteran quarterback in Cam Newton out to prove he is still that quarterback with MVP potential.

With the former Carolina Panthers quarterback available and, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, expressing his interest in playing for New England, perhaps it’s time to take this possible marriage a bit more seriously.

Let’s forget Jarrett Stidham, Jordan Love, Jalen Hurts or whatever young quarterback who may be the future of the Patriots for a moment.  The combination of Belichick and Newton, two men with success in the NFL looking for their own paths of redemption, could be a dangerous duo whether fans like it or not.

It could be gold, and here’s a reason why.

On a one-year, prove it deal, Cam Newton should be willing to put away the dabbing, the weird social media posts and post-game attitude to play for a head coach and franchise that is all about winning and winning as a team.

Cam Newton out for redemption

Given how he was let go by the Panthers, Newton is a talented veteran quarterback with a chip on his shoulders and the type of player Bill Belichick typically feasts on and more times than not finds success with, even if it’s just for a short period of time.

Not only is he a more mobile quarterback than Tom Brady, he has proven that he is a “high-level starter” capable of taking a team to a Super Bowl.  While the Patriots appear set on Jarrett Stidham, the truth is they would not be seen as a contender with a second-year quarterback under center, not yet anyway.

The addition of a motivated Newton, more so than a Jameis Winston would make them relevant.

I mentioned Winston because both quarterbacks are looking for new teams and the New England Patriots are one of the teams Sports Illustrated’s Peter King sees as a fit.

"“It’s logical to think…Look, if I’m Cam Newton and I am Jameis Winston I would sign with only three teams as of right now, as of right now,” King said during an appearance on WEEI’s Dale & Keefe Show.  “Unless a mystery team like the Chargers, for instance, would say it will be an even competition with you and Tyrod Taylor and I don’t think they would say that.  So I wouldn’t sign anywhere unless it was either Pittsburgh to work for one year behind (Ben) Roethlisberger and likely be the quarterback in 2021 or New England, and obviously, that would be a unique circumstance because Belichick is going to go by what he sees and play the best guy, and then Jacksonville.”"

After signing veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer, it appears Bill Belichick is not looking in the direction of Newton or even Winston for that matter.  But, at a cheap price, that could change if Cam Newton is willing to take on the challenge of proving himself once again playing under the best coach in the 2000s.

As King pointed out, Newton would have to earn his job with the Patriots, which should drive out the best in him if he still has it and at just 30 years old, he should just have it.

While missing the majority of the 2019 NFL season, Newton came off a season in 2018 in which he threw for 3,395 yards with 24 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.  He certainly still has the talent, and with the Patriots running back depth, having a mobile quarterback who can stand in the pocket when needed should be enticing for an offensive coordinator like Josh McDaniels.

So, let’s watch what the New England Patriots do in the 2020 NFL Draft.

If Bill Belichick does not take another quarterback, especially Jalen Hurts if available, a year of Cam Newton may be the road he takes at the right price.

Talk about the personality shift in going from a Tom Brady to Newton, but for most Patriots fans, he would be better than…Andy Dalton.
