New England Patriots 2020 NFL Draft: The future is on the clock
The New England Patriots are putting their future on the line as they enter a very important 2020 NFL Draft.
All the New England Patriots and NFL mock drafts are pretty much published. All the prognostications of the talking heads pretty much spoken. All the speculation and suppositions pretty much filed.
Everything’s done but the figurative shouting of the names.
The 2020 NFL Draft begins Thursday night.

For the Patriots, call it what you want. An eventful draft. A pivotal draft. A defining draft. A momentous draft. Even a historic draft. Roll out all the superlatives. It’s all of the above.
Whatever you choose to call it, it’s the most critically important draft in the history of the franchise, since the drafting of one Tom Brady with the 199th pick of the 2000 draft. It’s time to “rock-and-roll” as they say.
The end result of this draft will almost certainly define the short and perhaps long-term future of the New England Patriots franchise. Having enjoyed an unparalleled period of success under their all-time best quarterback for nearly 20 years, the Patriots decided to move on. Now they face an uncertain future without him.
It’s a new decade and it’s a new era for New England Patriots football. Make no mistake about that. This is no ordinary run-of-the-mill annual NFL player selection draft for the Patriots. This is IT. For all the marbles. For all the braggin’ rights. For the claim to be the best!
In 2020, fame and glory, dishonor and discredit and above all, reputations for the six-time Super Bowl champions, current and former team members and above all, coaching staffs are all on the line. This is no ordinary season and this is no ordinary NFL draft for New England.
This one is for all the marbles.
New England Patriots’ massive challenges in the 2020’s
Every year the NFL draft elicits wave upon wave of content for anxious NFL fans who care about that nebulous part of the season called “team-building”. Those who don’t aren’t really seeing what all this boils down to.
In short, it constitutes just about everything to their team’s success in the ensuing season.
All the various aspects of team-building matter. Free agency; trades; the draft; undrafted free agency; acquisitions of players cut after the draft; in-season acquisitions by trade and/or free agency; and, some I’m probably leaving out. These activities are the foundations of not only any NFL team’s success, but any team’s success.
The challenge immediately facing Bill Belichick and his personnel team is a daunting one. An article outlined why this is the biggest coaching challenge of his career for Bill Belichick in detail. Another article cited that Josh McDaniels, the Patriots offensive coordinator is clearly on-the-spot in seeking to mold a new post-Tom Brady offense.
New England Patriots’ looming decisions on their offensive system and the players to implement it are the keys to their future
The Patriots defense has been decimated by the loss of key players who have not been adequately replaced. This presents an additional challenge for the management team. Yet, the challenge of the moment, the season and perhaps the decade will be how the Patriots form their offense for 2020 and beyond.
All Patriots mock drafts provide ideas for player selections for the team. Some have provided rather both a master plan and suggested specific players to execute it. Those particular mock drafts suggest a new modus operandi for the offense.
NFL football is a dynamic and constantly evolving organism. Systems change over time as innovation breeds success and are copied by others until the innovation becomes the new norm. It is then eventually replaced by a new innovative iteration, etc., etc.
Under this evolutionary process, teams rise and fall based upon their ability to evolve, adapt and modify their systems. If they can’t, they fall behind.
A new model for the New England Patriots’ offense
The new model suggested for the New England Patriots transforms their offense completely. It departs from the static, complicated and perhaps sometimes incomprehensible (at least to some even previously productive players) system of the past two decades to a completely new system.
The past offense was created and enhanced over two decades around a quarterback with unique talents and unequaled comprehension and discernment of all facets of that intricate and complex offensive system. That quarterback now plays elsewhere.
The new offense would be transformed into one that is in-tune with the currently arising read-option, mobile offenses which are beginning to dominate the NFL. It is simpler, yet more versatile, flexible and adaptable on a play-by-play basis. It is even adjustable within the confines of a play.
To remain static and not evolve is to stand still and regress. The 2020 NFL Draft presents a unique opportunity for the New England Patriots as well as the staggering challenges. They can use this draft to begin to adjust and reshape their offense along with the new NFL or choose to remain stagnant and fall behind.
With the tremendous acumen of their coaching staff, there is no reason why this transformation cannot take place and even emerge tremendously successful in the 2020 season. We will see by Day 3 of the 2020 NFL Draft if they have accepted the challenge to adapt and move forward or remain stuck in the past and decline.
