New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick’s playful pup, Nike fairly stole the show on draft weekend as he plunked down at the laptop to produce the Patriots picks.

New England Patriots draft night in a rare televised display of man-dog true friendship, communication and trust called to mind the close relationship between the star, a dog named Buck and his master, John Thornton in Jack London ‘s classic novel, “The Call of the Wild” and the bond between him and Buck, his dog.

Rumor has it that Nike, close friend of the Patriots Head of Football Operations has earned sufficient trust to earn the de facto moniker of Patriots general manager though that has yet to be confirmed by the team or by Nike.

In this unusual demonstration of the delegation of authority, the coach gladly relinquished his prime position at the draft table to his four-legged friend. There is widespread speculation that Nike was rewarded with a doggie treat, but only after every pick with which the coach agreed. This could not be substantiated, however after several inquiries.

Nike’s ostensible assumption of the conduct was vehemently denied by the Patriots website.

"Though Nike is, regrettably, not part of the Patriots drafting brain trust, he is in more of a support role and is still a very, very good boy."

Nonetheless, it is widely speculated that he, in fact, submitted the Patriots picks by tapping his right forepaw onto the keyboard texting the name of the pick to the NFL office. The Patriots Communications office upon interrogatory would neither confirm nor deny the veracity of either the rumored promotion or draft strategy employed by Nike and the team that evening.

One thing was clear, however, that the Patriots head of football operations clearly deferred to his rumored newly appointed general manager by allowing him to sit at the dining room table behind the official keyboard and ostensibly make the picks.

The subject of whether in fact Nike actually selected the Patriots picks has been the subject of wide supposition in both the NFL, sports world generally and throughout the entire print and electronic media. It is widely conjectured that Nike did, in fact, determine who the picks would be and additionally sent the choices to the league office. This could not be confirmed after a thorough investigation, however.

As to how well the Patriots performed in the draft, that is also rife with assessments, conclusions, and opinions by both the Boston media, wider NFL audiences, and many draft analysts.

Only time will tell, of course, how well Nike did with his selections. Yet, there is general agreement that he did as well as the Patriots have done in other recent drafts.
