New England Patriots are rolling with second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham, but one NFL executive isn’t ruling out Cam Newton.

The New England Patriots and Bill Belichick have made it clear.  They are rolling with second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham going into the 2020 NFL season…for now anyway.

As the NFL world turns, there is always a possibility for change, especially when it comes to star players looking for transition.  One available star, veteran quarterback Cam Newton, continues to be tied to the Patriots as a possible option even after it has been reported that offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is not a big fan of Newton.

So why are we still talking about the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback after the team has committed to Stidham, the McDaniels factor, along with the being handcuffed in salary cap jail?

Well, because of Bill Belichick of course.  As one of the most unpredictable minds in the NFL as far as roster maneuvering, if Belichick visions Cam Newton in a Patriots’ uniform for the 2020 NFL season and believes he gives the team the best chance to be competitive, he will pick up the phone and try to make it happen.

In a column written for The Athletic, former NFL executive Mike Lombardi highlights the New England Patriots salary cap disadvantage in signing the 30-year-old free agent.  But, with his knowledge of Belichick and the team also would never rule out the possibility if the stars align both financially and medically.

"“Still, if Newton’s medical and price tag aligns with the Patriots’ salary cap thinking, I would never rule them out as potential suitor,” Lombardi wrote, via WEEI. “Newton could play well in New England. He would have to accept the structure and culture, but his love of football and his love of winning would allow him to adapt.”"

He also went on to say that the timing is not right for the New England Patriots in that they don’t know his medicals and they also don’t have the available space to give him the starter money quarterback hungry teams like the Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars can offer him.

So, it really is wait and see for New England Patriots fans.  If Jarrett Stidham proves he is not ready and Cam Newton is still sitting out there, perhaps Belichick would pounce on the opportunity to bring in a quarterback who still has a lot left in his tank.

Next. Bill Belichick believes Jarrett Stidham is the answer. dark

Maybe by then, Newton’s financial value will diminish enough for the Patriots to take a chance and bring in him.
