The New England Patriots gave Patrick Chung a 2-year extension on Wednesday solidifying their already impressive defense.

In 2019 the New England Patriots defense led the way. The usually high scoring offense was no more and we saw the Pats become a more defensive team.

Entering 2020 the Patriots still have a quality defense led by Stephon Gilmore and have veterans like Dont’a Hightower and Devin McCourty returning.

You can add another name to the list. Patrick Chung won’t be leaving New England anytime soon. Chung signed a 2-year extension with the team on Wednesday.

This is an important move for many reasons. First off this shows that Chung will be playing for a while. There were rumors that Chung was going to retire but thankfully that is not the case. His new deal keeps him with the team until the end of the 2023 season.

I wouldn’t have been surprised if Chung did decide to retire. He has had to deal with a lot of injuries recently. You have to credit his toughness as he has still found a way to play 15 games in 5 of the last 6 seasons.

Chung’s play hasn’t suffered at all. Since New England, he has been a beast. In 3 of the last 4 seasons, Chung has snagged at least one interception and also Chung has recorded at least 80 tackles.

Chung is a ballhawk. He has an innate ability to find the ball carrier. He is a safety who can be a problem for opposing running backs. When Chung finds the ballcarrier he gets his money’s worth. He is known for dropping the hammer on opposing players.

The extension also freed up some space for the New England Patriots. This allowed them to become the first team in the NFL to sign all their draft picks as they signed Kyle Dugger to a deal on Wednesday.
