Stephon Gilmore might have had an amazing season for the New England Patriots but let’s not forget about J.C. Jackson.

With Stephon Gilmore dominating the secondary it was hard to recognize the other stars of the New England Patriots defense. Looking back now we can see that there were some other stars.

When you think of the Patriots secondary you think of Gilmore, Devin McCourty, and Jonathan Jones. J.C. Jackson isn’t one of the first names that fans think of but he is one of the best players on New England’s defense.

More from Chowder and Champions

Jackson has had quite the start to his career and really came into his own in 2019. Last season even though he only started in 6 games he managed to grab 5 interceptions as well as 10 passes defended.

Jackson’s performance in man coverages will leave you speechless. He seems to thrive when he is battling against receivers.

The numbers Jackson put up in man coverage are astonishing. Opposing wide receivers were only able to make 19 catches for 181 yards on 46 targets. That is pretty impressive.

Now Jackson needs to continue to improve. Of course, it will be hard to improve after such an amazing season but let’s see what Jackson can do.

Hopefully in 2020, we will see Jackson get more snaps. There is no doubt that the Patriots secondary is clogged with talent but that is a good problem to have. Especially when you have an unproven quarterback taking over.

It appears that Jackson is another example of the Patriots recognizing a player’s talent before the rest of the NFL. How many undrafted free agents have they turned into key players? Does Malcolm Butler ring a bell?

So headed into 2020 don’t forget how talented the Patriots secondary is. If they can play as they did in 2019 they could find themselves in the playoffs in 2020.
